INSTRUCTIONAL COACHING ANNUAL REPORT:
PWPSD Coaches provide teaching and learning strategies

Even the youngest students are capable of using technology for learning within their curriculum.

Teacher feedback on the value of PWPSD's Instructional Coaches continues to be overwhelmingly positive.

Educational Technologists Leah Montes and Memorese Walter manage a resource website and have worked with teachers to create more than 800 resources and supports for PWPSD classrooms and schools. Teachers can also book the technologists for personalized, group and in-class professional development on implementing and integrating technology into curriculum.

The technologists emphasize using technology as a tool and not a toy, adding that even the youngest students are capable of learning skills that will serve them well throughout their education and beyond, such as creating digital presentations and posters to demonstrate learning, and understanding changing technologies. Google Maps and Speak to Text/Text to Speech technology also provide enhanced learning opportunities for all students.

Instructional Coaches April Brown and Leann Miller, responsible for K-3 and Grades 4-6 Literacy/Numeracy respectively, provide literacy and numeracy teaching strategies during monthly visits to schools, in addition to email and telephone support.

The Five Pillars of Literacy – Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension – are used to form the foundation of a quality literacy curriculum upon which reading and writing are based. The two coaches have also aligned schools to use the same math vocabulary and consistent models to build number sense, thereby strengthening students' math literacy and skills, and reducing confusion year over year.

Any PWPSD teacher can access Literacy and Numeracy Coaches. Support is provided to suit the teacher's targeted learning goal.
