After breaking for most of the summer, 238 is back and ready for action! The past two months were plenty busy as we worked to get back into the swing of things.

Software
This past summer software has been focusing on better shoulder values for calibration and tracking, code refactoring to promote reusability, investigating new vision systems and general performance enhancements. Our progress has been slow but steady, especially while incorporating new members into our coding system. As our projects progress we hope to rid our code of negative values and form a solid foundation for this upcoming year’s game.

CAD
At the beginning of the summer we were working on a drive train, and once that was completed one of our students worked on making a lightsaber. It was designed in six pieces on the computer. Both projects were finished in a timely manner. Our goals are to expand our knowledge of CAD, train new members for the upcoming season, and 3D-print our lightsaber.

Outreach
Prior to the team’s “summer vacation” we held a fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse on June 20th where we got to show off our robot. More recently, we have been focusing on recruiting new members. Two of our students attended freshman orientation on August 29th where they distributed flyers and answered questions about the team. On September 17th, we held our annual New Student Meeting where new students were shown the ropes of our team. In an attempt to spread the word, we have been hanging bright yellow posters around the school, posting on social media, and advocating to be on the morning announcements. This team couldn’t run without new and committed members!

Fisher Cats
At the Fisher Cats game on August 25th we showed off our robots, Tumbler and Riddler. We involved children by shooting boulders and cargo balls for them to put back into the intake; some also got the chance to drive the robots. We were given the opportunity to work closely and demonstrate with FRC Team 6328 Mechanical Advantage, expanding our reach to more baseball fans. By doing this event, we were able to educate, introduce, and help new people experience FIRST.

Governor's Cup
The Governor’s Cup was our first offseason event of the year. This event is a New Hampshire only competition where students have the opportunity to receive scholarship money. Both of the students we nominated earned $2,000 each. We brought our 2019 robot, RIDDLER, who put up a good fight against the number one seeded teams (131 C.H.A.O.S, 319 Big Bad Bob, and 1058 PVC Pirates) and made it to the semifinals with 3323 Potential Energy and 5813 Morpheus. Throughout the day, only a few minor rivet repairs had to be made to the robot. We even had a few new students come to experience an enjoyable event filled with excitement and support.

Alumnus Spotlight
Abbey D. is one of our most recent graduates and a past team lead. She meant a lot to our team, whether it was being on drive team, mocking up prototypes, or writing for our newsletter. Abbey helped the team qualify four years consecutively for world championships and contributed to many winners’ banners and awards galore. She was even nominated by the team for the prestigious “Dean’s List” award. Currently, Abbey is in her freshman year at Wheaton College in Norton, MA where she aspires to continue her journey in STEM as a physics major. FIRST inspired her career and helped Abbey discover her passion.
