Reducing Diaper Insecurity To Strengthen Economic Stability for Families

Brightpoint is committed to advocating for solutions that can prevent abuse and neglect and strengthen families. In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, our theme this year - Economic Stability is Family Stability - highlights the connections between financial insecurity and parental stress. There are solutions - by reducing the impacts of economic shocks, like diaper insecurity, we can meaningfully reduce a family’s likelihood of interacting with the child welfare system.

In our issue brief, Eliminating Diaper Insecurity for Illinois Infants and Young Children, we explore precisely what diaper insecurity is, what research tells us about how diaper insecurity impacts children and families, and the policy tools available to legislators to reduce diaper insecurity. Addressing diaper insecurity through public policy not only alleviates immediate financial burdens but also enhances long-term family stability. Such preventive measures are essential for building a foundation where families have the resources they need to thrive.

Take Action and Reduce Diaper Insecurity

Funding early childhood programs so they can provide diapers for families is one solution highlighted in our issue brief that could greatly reduce diaper insecurity as a barrier for families accessing child care. HB545 requires IDHS to provide an add-on rate to child care providers in the state's Child Care Assistance Program to purchase diapers to have available when families need them. Providers would then no longer be allowed to turn away children due to a caregiver’s inability to provide diapers. You can make a difference by telling your State Representative to support HB545

Advocacy Day in Springfield

Our dedicated policy team headed to Springfield on April 11th to engage directly with state legislators about diaper insecurity in Illinois. Our team, joined by several diaper banks from across Illinois, advocated and raised awareness about the importance of making diapers accessible and affordable for families with limited incomes.
