Nominations Open: Bike Commuter of the Year and Bike Friendly Business of the Year

As part of the Bike to Work Month festivities, each of the nine Bay Area counties crowns one dedicated and inspiring individual as “Bike Commuter of the Year.” Last year’s winner from Sonoma County was Dr. Tracey Jones, a specialist in Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine at Kaiser. (Read about her here.) Click here to nominate 2019’s winner.

In 2018 we offered our first Bike Friendly Business Award to Jackson Family Wines – read about them here.  How can YOU make your workplace more bike-friendly? Check out our tips for a bike friendly workplace. Click here for the nomination form.

Deadline for both awards is April first.

Advocacy Update

We attend all those meetings so you don't have to! Here's a summary of what's been happening around the coun
  •
  • Sonoma County Regional Parks is planning two new trails on the north coast. The Kashia Coastal Reserve trail will be multi-use, but the Stewarts Point trail as proposed is hiking only. WHY? That question is not answered in any of the published materials. Given the narrowness and curvature of Highway 1 through that area, having a protected bypass for part of it would be a good thing for cyclists! Email them your thoughts and questions.
  • Rohnert Park is looking at several improvements, including a roundabout at the intersection of Commerce and Southwest Boulevards.
  • Santa Rosa's Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan Update was approved by the City Council.
  • We attended a focus group on Santa Rosa's Downtown Station Area Plan Update to advocate for more bike-friendly infrastructure in the area.
  • A coalition of Sonoma Valley residents and environmental groups met to discuss the book Building the Cycling City: The Dutch Blueprint for Urban Vitality  and how they might apply what they learned to make the town of Sonoma more bike-friendly.
On the national level, Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer has introduced HR 1507 to reinstitute the Bicycle Commuter Tax Benefit. Call our local reps Jared Huffman (707-981-8967) and Mike Thompson (707-542-7182) and ask them to co-sponsor the bill!
