Update on Joe Rodota Trail Encampment
MONDAY DECEMBER 23 -  9:00 AM
BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CHAMBER, 575 Administration Drive

We sat through a FIVE HOUR Board of Supervisors meeting today, to find out their plans for addressing the homeless encampment on the Joe Rodota Trail. The presentation from staff (Barbie Robinson, Director of Dept. of Health Services; Geoffrey Ross, ED of the Community Development Commission; and Alegria de la Cruz, Deputy County Counsel) was not very much more detailed than the documents we shared with you yesterday. They did share their goal of a 100 day timeline for getting these folks sheltered, and expanded a bit on some of the properties they are considering for various sorts of housing (shared houses, campgrounds, safe parking, etc.) The document included a line item about "securing the trail [fencing]" which was not explained - fencing it to not allow new campers? Fencing to keep cyclists out? Our question about this was not answered.

The room was packed, and about thirty people spoke during public comment. THANK YOU to Susie, Ginny, Sheila, and Bonnie who joined us and spoke out for bicycle access on the trail! Once again, Shirlee Zane was the only one of the Supervisors who even uttered the "b" word.

An agenda for the Monday meeting has not yet been posted, but when it is you can find it here.  We plan to attend the meeting.
Supervisor Gorin stated that this meeting would NOT include public comment, but we're not entirely sure that is legal.

TAKE ACTION!
  • Attend the meeting. Even if we can't speak, they can see that we are watching them.
  • If you can't attend, write to the  Board of Supervisors. Emphasize how much we need the trail for safe car-free transportation!
