SCBC Endorses Proposition 68
SCBC endorses Proposition 68, the Parks, Environment and Water Bond, on the California ballot June 5. Prop. 68 is a $4.1 billion bond that will improve and expand state, regional and neighborhood parks, restore and protect our coast and rivers, protect our drinking water and prepare for future droughts. It’s been 15 years since California last passed a major park bond! What you may not know is that Prop. 68 will also invest in trails and greenways. If approved, Prop 68 could mean tens of millions of dollars or more for trails in California! More information about the measure is available here.

Improving Safety on the Joe Rodota Trail
In mid-April, residents of a homeless encampment in Roseland were evicted and many moved to the nearby Joe Rodota Trail, an important bicycle and pedestrian route connecting Sebastopol and Santa Rosa. Soon after, we began hearing and witnessing incidents that compromise the safety of trail users: trash, sharps, human waste, verbal harrassment, and campers blocking others from passing. Many cyclists and pedestrians report that they have stopped using that stretch of the trail.
Last week, cyclist Bill Petty was assaulted on the trail, with injuries including facial fractures. In response, we circulated a petition asking the County Board of Supervisors to take action to make the trail safe for its intended use. 740 individuals signed, many sharing their experiences of harrassment and witnessing of inappropriate behavior. Bike to Work Day a Success!
Whew! What a day!
1265 folks stopped at one of our twenty Energizer Stations throughout the county, enjoying treats including coffee, waffles, burritos, pancakes, donuts, and pastries. About thirty stopped by for beer & snacks at the after-work party at 2 Tread Brewing. About 40 organizations – cities, companies, nonprofits – participated in some way: hosting an Energizer Station, donating food, and/or sponsoring items in the goody bags.
And who can even count how many folks re-posted the event on Facebook, forwarded it via email, volunteered to stuff bags or hand out treats, nudged or cajoled their coworkers to give bike commuting a try…or how many folks took that first step out of their car and onto a bike?!? We heard numerous stories of folks stepping out of the comfort zone to ride their bike to work for the first time.
But, wait, it’s not over! The Team Bike Challenge continues through the end of May; currently local rider (and last year’s winner) Jorge Cruz is leading the entire Bay Area in miles ridden this month! And we’re still taking nominations for the Bike-Friendly Business of the Year – nominate your employer here!

Volunteer Opportunities
SCBC offers valet bike parking at various events around the county. We set up a parking “corral”, and event attendees check their bikes with us while they enjoy the event. It’s outside, it’s fun, you get to hear the music and help the Coalition at the same time! (You do need to be able to lift bikes, help assemble bike racks, etc.)
Here are a few of the events for which we could use some help:
- Healdsburg Tuesday Night Concert Series, starts May 29. Shifts are 4:30-6:30 pm and 6:30-8:30 pm.
- Santa Rosa Gay Pride Parade & Festival, Courthouse Square, June 2. Shifts are 10 am – 1 pm, 1-4 pm, 4-7 pm, 7-9 pm.
- Railroad Square Music Festival, June 10. Shifts are 10 am – 1 pm, 1-4 pm, 4-7 pm, 7-9 pm.
