Hundreds of Fire Victims Receive New Bikes in Time for Xmas!

The SCBC is proud to have joined alongside public responders and community members on December 6 at Sonoma’s Highway 12 Winery’s Warehouse to help distribute upwards of 700 bicycles to adults and children who lost their homes and belongings in the fires. Attendees also received free helmets and water bottles!

In an impressive and heartwarming display of support, firefighters from several Marin, Sonoma and CALFIRE fire departments organized and staffed the giveaway, with donations and support from Giant Bicycle, Mike's Bikes, Kali Protectives, SCBC and many other community groups and individuals too numerous to list.

Caltrans District 4 Bicycle Plan

When Caltrans updated its safety and sustainability goals, they set a target to triple bicycling by 2020.  To that end, they have been soliciting public input on projects to improve cycling access and safety on the thousands of miles of state highways and freeways they oversee.

Caltrans is accepting comments on the draft plan for the Bay Area (District 4) through December 22.  The webpage for accepting comments is an interactive map of the Bay Area; by zooming in and clicking on an area of interest, you can read more details about a specific project and add your own comments.  (The map can take a little while to figure out; if you’d just like a brief summary of the proposed projects here in Sonoma click here.)

The tax bill recently passed by the Senate eliminates the $20 per-month tax benefit available for those who bike to work – yet maintains the $255 per-month benefit for vehicles and parking.  The bike commuter benefit costs so little, yet encouraging folks to bicycle instead of drive provides so many benefits!  People for Bikes has created on online letter petitioning Congress to restore the benefit – click here to add your name!

Caltrans, Sonoma County Transportation Authority, and other Bay Area agencies are working together to make improvements along State Route 37.  We’d like to make sure that any solutions include safe access for bicyclists! If you’d like to add your comments about this or any other issue relevant to Highway 37, click here to take a brief survey. Let decision makers know that you support a separated bike/pedestrian path as the baseline of any project alternative. (Respondents will also be entered into a drawing for  $25 gift card.)
