Virtual Events This Week

We can't ride together or offer face-to-face classes these days....but that doesn't mean we can't continue our work to educate and inspire cyclists! Join us online for a series of weekly conversations on a variety of cycling topics. Each session will include a few experts along with plenty of time for Q&A.

  • 05/20 at noon: BikeChat: Bicycle Advocacy. Learn about our efforts to improve bicycle policy & infrastructure in Sonoma County, and how you can help!
  • 05/20 7:00 pm: Ride of Silence. A memorial for cyclists who have killed by motorists.
  • 05/25 7:00 pm: Basic Bike Repair & Maintenance. Learning the basics of bike repair & maintenance will ensure your rides are safe and enjoyable!
Ongoing:

Slow Streets

One of the unexpected benefits of the Shelter in Place order has been a resurgence in cycling – folks who haven’t ridden in years are pulling rusty bikes out of the garage and riding with their families. Local bike shops report a significant surge in repairs and sales.  We are experiencing a marked reduction in vehicle traffic. We have an opportunity to keep this momentum going and support people in their new transportation habits. Cities around the world are closing streets to through traffic to create more space for people to exercise while maintaining social distance. It can be done quickly and cheaply: Oakland recently closed 74 miles of streets using nothing more than cones and signage.

Last week, Petaluma rolled out a Slow Streets project with one site on the east side and one on the west. Folks are advocating for Santa Rosa to make Sonoma Avenue a Slow Street. What streets in YOUR town would be good candidates?

Tune in to tomorrow's Advocacy BikeChat for tips on  how to be an effective advocate, and check our Advocacy webpage on how to contact your elected offficials!
THANK YOU to everyone who ordered a bandanna/mask - they finally arrived and all orders have been shipped!
