Safe Routes to School Art Contest

It's time for our annual winter art & writing contest, and this year we're teaming with  Sonoma County Library and St. Joseph's Health Foundation to invite students to design a Safe Routes to School themed bookmark & haiku.  The contest is open to kids in grades 2-8. The deadline is March first. Entry forms and more information can be found here or email saferoutes@bikesonoma.org.

Advocacy Updates

We attend all those meetings so you don't have to! Here's a summary of what's been happening around the county:
  • Petaluma: The Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee is advocating for wider bike lanes on Sonoma Mountain Parkway and working to prioritize bike projects in the city. They recently reviewed Safe Routes to School assessments for the two high schools. We met with Bike Petaluma to discuss ways that our two organizations might collaborate with each other.
  • Santa Rosa Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan was approved by the Planning Commission February 14 and will go to the City Council in March.
  • SMART: Joe Naujokas (Healdsburg City Council) and Chris Rogers (Santa Rosa Vice Major) were elected to the Board of Directors. (Your emails and calls definitely helped determine the outcome!) SMART is in line to receive MTC funding to close the bike path gap between Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa, and to build sections in Petaluma.
  • Lower Russian River Trail: We participated in a series of focus groups as part of the initial study for creation of this bicycle/pedestrian trail along the River between MIrabel and Jenner.
  • Great Redwood Trail: We attended a meeting of supporters to discuss how we might help promote this project as it moves into its study phase.
  • Sonoma Valley: We attended the ribbon cutting for Teen Services Sonoma's Operation Bicycle. Local folks are planning an event to discuss the book Building the Cycling City and how they might apply what they learn from it to making Sonoma more bike-friendly.
