Annual Member Meeting a Success!

Despite the rain and the cold over eighty members made the trek to our annual members meeting on Friday January 11th (over twenty of them by bike!). Name badges included the number of years each person has been a member, leading to some great stories and shared memories of how the Sonoma County Bike Coalition has grown over the years.

After a tasty dinner, we heard from our 2019 Board of Directors candidates, acknowledged our super volunteers, and had a lively discussion about bike-related activities and politics. [read more]

Advocacy Updates

We attend all those meetings so you don't have to! Here's a summary of what's been happening around the county:

Petaluma BPAC: Public Works presented their plan for repaving Sonoma Mountain Parkway; the BPAC made multiple suggestions to improve the cyclist and pedestrian experience. Having previously compiled a "wish list" of city-wide improvements, they created a committee to prioritize the list. One high priority: the Lynch Creek Trail, potentially an important east-west connector, is in sad shape.
Santa Rosa BPAC: Approved, with a few revisions, the city's new Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan. The Plan is scheduled to go before the Planning Commission February 14 and to the City Council in March. They also approved allocating $577K to construct Class II bike lanes on Santa Rosa Avenue between Sonoma and Maple Avenues.
County-Wide BPAC: The City of Cotati approved a Bicycle & Pedestrian Wayfinding Plan. Safe Routes to School has been working with W-Trans to collect collision and other safety data around schools, with the ultimate goal of creating a walkability/bikeability "scorecard." The Sonoma County Transportation Authority is working on a project to make transportation data more transparent and user-friendly. An RFP for bikeshare will be going out from SCTA soon; Healdsburg shared data from their first year of bikeshare usage.
SMART Board of Directors: Two new Directors will be elected by the Sonoma County Mayors & Councilmembers Association on January 31. Read more here.

Volunteer Opportunity!

Santa Rosa SportsBasement is holding their annual Fit Fest this Saturday, from 9 am to noon. Representatives from Bay Area bike rides, triathlons, footraces, and gyms will be there offering discounted event registration, memberships, and raffle prizes.  There is a pancake breakfast at 10 am and the proceeds benefit the Coalition! We could use a couple of volunteers from 9 am to about 11:30 to help sling pancakes. Email Cherie at cherie@bikesonoma.org if you can help out!
