Building the Cycling City: Book Discussion

Jen Palladini of the Sonoma Valley Climate Coalition is hosting a discussion on Wednesday March 13 from 1:30-3:00 in the front room at the Sonoma Valley Library.

Please read Building the Cycling City: The Dutch Blueprint for Urban Vitality, and come prepared to share your thoughts on what from the book you'd like to see enacted locally. Many in Sonoma share a vision of a city with roads built not just for cars, but also for people. Sonoma has great potential - it's small and flat - yet despite this many residents feel unsafe hopping on a bike to go even the shortest distances. Let's work to change that!

The purpose of reading and discussing the book is to learn:

How cities in the Netherlands succeeded in creating a "cycling city," what challenges they faced along the way, and how they overcame them
How cities in the US and elsewhere have imported lessons from the Netherlands to enhance their own cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. There is no "one size fits all" approach.
Begin to create a shared vision of what a "cycling Sonoma" might look like, begin a conversation about how we get there, and how we should #DemandMore (reference to Jonathan Fertig, a bike advocate profiled in the book).
