Amy Suyama

In September of 2016, three-quarters of the way into the Tour de Fuzz, Amy Suyama was killed on Eastside Road. Driver Courtney Rudin, who veered into her lane in order to pass a slow-moving truck, was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.  After months of investigations by the California Highway Patrol and the Sonoma County District Attorney’s office, and a lengthy trial, Judge Barbara Phelan declared a mistrial on April 22. Meet Our Bike Commuter of the Year
Sgt. Dave Thompson

Each year, in honor of Bike to Work Month in May, the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition (SCBC) honors one inspiring cyclist as Bike Commuter of the Year. This year’s winner, Sergeant Dave Thompson, is a twenty-seven year veteran of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. He regular rides the eight miles between his home in Windsor and the Sheriff’s Office. Sgt. Thompson’s commitment doesn’t stop with his daily commute; he gives back to the cycling community as a volunteer with SCBC’s Safe Routes to School program. [Read more...]
Our Safe Routes to School staff are collaborating with Sonoma County Library on a series of "B is for Bikes" storytimes throughout the month of May.  See the full schedule here.

Another recent collaboration, our first annual SRTS Bookmark Design and Haiku Contest, received a fabulous response. Students were asked to write and draw about using their senses while walking and bicycling.  Grand Prize, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and Honorable Mention winners were selected for each grade-level category; 2nd-3rd Grade, 4th-5th Grade, and 6th-8th Grade. You can view the winners' work here.

Pledge to Bike to Work May 9

On Bike to Work Day, Energizer Stations are set up during the morning commute (6-9 am) along cycling routes throughout the county, offering riders snacks, swag, and encouragement. It's a party on two wheels! After work, check out one of our after parties at the Trail House in Santa Rosa or Crooked Goat in Sebastopol.

Employers - Why should you encourage your workers to cycle? And what are the best ways to do so? Check out our Employer Toolkit!

While Bike to Work Day is the highlight of the month, we have plenty of other activities throughout May to encourage folks who ride. Form a team of up to ten coworkers or friends and compete for the most miles ridden through the month of May - increase your motivation, win prizes, and have fun!

More Bike to Work Month info available here.
