FIRST Robotics Competition Team 238
2018 Build Season Week 6 & Stop Build Day Newsletter
CATWOMAN
We would like to formally introduce our 2018 FIRST POWER UP robot, Catwoman. She can reach up to 7 feet, has 24 different automodes, and can lift herself up to 40 inches in the air!
Week Zero is a scrimmage competition where teams can test out their robots before the end of Build Season. At the Week Zero competition at Bedford High School, our robot performed with excellence. We mainly focused on placing cubes onto the scale in the middle of the field. Initially, there were issues with our autonomous modes not activating, but it was resolved in time for the later matches. After being picked by the number one alliance for the elimination matches, we went on to win the competition. The outcome of this event shows a very promising 2018 season ahead.
The main focus of the Technical division during the final week of Build Season was to complete our competition robot. For the Mechanical subteam, the main focus of this week was robot weight reduction, modifying our intake and creating spares. We are very satisfied with how smooth our build season went this year because we got very clear CAD drawings and defined a machining process that works well for our team.

The Software subteam focused on creating a selection for autonomous modes on the shuffleboard. It is meant to be simple enough for everyone to use it. We have also worked on tuning our autonomous modes to get the movement paths right.
The Electrical subteam worked on our practice robot’s intake to make some adjustments to the energy chain so it can move along with our elevator. We then copied the same adjustments over to the competition robot. We finished the rest of the wiring on the competition robot and batteries. The biggest challenge we faced this season was wiring the intake because the wire had to be secured on an non-movable platform while the energy chain had to move along with the elevator.

On Stop Build Day (February 20th) we were able to complete our competition robot with an hour to spare and locked away Catwoman in the bag.
During the final week of the Build Season the Marketing subteam has been hard at work developing all the media we are bringing to our competitions such as buttons, flyers, business cards, preparing our judge packs and ensuring we are recognizing our sponsors in our pit at the competition. The Chairman’s Award team has been creating and practicing the presentation for the judges and a video that will be displayed at the event if we win the award.
Team 238 owes a HUGE thank you to the team parents for being such a great help this Build Season! While all of us students and mentors were busy working on the robot and community projects, they kept us fed and healthy!

Thank you also to Memorial High School for our great build space and classroom resources. We couldn’t do this without your support!
