2020 SRL TEACHER Summer Workshop Application Still Open!
The SRL Team is monitoring the potential postponement of events like our annual teacher workshop during the coronavirus pandemic. In the meantime, we encourage all teachers interested in starting their own Student Reporting Lab to still apply. The training is free, but teachers are expected to cover travel and lodging. Deadline is March 30.
At the beginning of March, New York City's local PBS station, WNET, hosted a Youth Collective Summit for the second year in a row. During the event, PBS NewsHour Weekend Edition Anchor Hari Sreenivasan (left), 2019 SRL Journalist of the Year Mary Williams (center), and SRL alumnus Bailey Childress (not pictured) discussed ways young people can take part in combating misinformation. Hari and SRL were named MediaWise Ambassadors and will take an active role in supporting media literacy efforts.
Leah Clapman, Elis Estrada and Rawan Elbaba facilitated a five-day training in Amman, Jordan in partnership with the Jordan Media Institute (JMI). Twelve educators from three different cities worked with SRL staffers to learn video production and journalism best practices. Teachers will work with students to produce videos for Almamlaka TV.
#Election2020 is a great opportunity for student reporters to practice their journalism skills by talking to young voters about the candidates and issues they care about this election season.
Especially during a pandemic, safe journalism demands that reporters and their sources keep their distance. Luckily, video journalists have been conducting remote interviews for years. And today’s virtual web tools allow journalists to reach sources remotely and conduct recorded interviews. Here are tips and tools to help you make high-quality interview footage from afar. This edition is brought to you by SRL Youth Media Producer Eli Kintisch, who oversees schools in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S. Chris Allen, SRL's Education Project Manager, and others also contributed to this document.
