For Immediate Release:
Drunk Driving is wrong. Congresswoman Haley Stevens should condemn Joe Biden’s remarks excusing DUIs for illegal immigrants.
January 22, 2020: Congressional candidate Eric Esshaki said, “When I was Nurse, I saw firsthand the horrific carnage caused by drunk drivers. DUI is a serious life-endangering action. We must not excuse drunk driving—whether you are a citizen, a tourist or an illegal immigrant. For Joe Biden to specifically say DUI is not worthy of arrest and deportation for illegal immigrants is reckless and beyond shocking.”
At a Vice News forum in Iowa on Monday, presidential candidate Joe Biden said he would fire Federal ICE agents who arrest and deport illegal immigrants caught while drunk driving.
Michigan State Police report that over 5,200 people are injured and approximately 300 people are killed each year in Michigan by alcohol-related crashes.
Esshaki continued, “Congresswoman Haley Stevens owes it to our community to join me in condemning Biden’s remarks. There should not be a ‘go easy’ policy on DUI for any group for any reason. To combat drunk driving we should fully enforce our laws against whoever is drunk driving.”
The former vice president was outlining his plan to reform the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency by firing ICE agents. Biden said, "You change the culture by saying you are going to get fired. You are fired if, in fact, you do that. You only arrest for the purpose of dealing with a felony that's committed, and I don't count drunk driving as a felony."
Esshaki concluded, “Biden’s new technical standard of a felony should not be a “get out of jail card” for illegal immigrants who drive drunk. Congresswoman Haley Stevens needs to condemn this policy immediately.”
