Safety Spotlight: New pedestrian signal on Johnny Morris Road provides safer crossing, access to Southern Walnut Creek Trail

Map showing intersection of Johnny Morris Road and Daffan Lane, with Walnut Creek Trail.

Pedestrian safety is a top priority at ATD, and a big part of that is creating crucial connections for people. With that in mind, we recently activated a pedestrian hybrid beacon at Johnny Morris Road and Daffan Lane, at the northern entrance to the Southern Walnut Creek Trail. Pedestrians now have a signalized option for crossing Johnny Morris, an undivided four-lane roadway, without having to walk nearly three-quarters of a mile to the nearest signalized crossing at US-290.

The area includes Decker Elementary School, Decker Middle School and residential developments. The new pedestrian hybrid beacon connects the Southern Walnut Creek Trail on the west side of Johnny Morris and the western portion of the Austin to Manor Trail, which connects directly with Decker Elementary, on the east side of Johnny Morris. In the week closing October and kicking off November, a daily average of roughly 50 pedestrians and 315 cyclists used the Southern Walnut Creek Trail.

This project was completed and will be maintained by ATD in partnership with Travis County, as it lies outside of the Austin city limits.

Pedestrian hybrid beacons are button-activated signals which allow pedestrians to safely cross busy roadways where there is no traffic signal nearby. Read about more recently installed pedestrian hybrid beacons.

2018 Bond Task Force seeking public input prior to recommendations

The Bond Election Advisory Task Force, established by the Austin City Council in 2016, is seeking public input in advance of offering its recommendations to Council for a bond package to go to voters in 2018.

The Council specifically directed City staff and the Task Force to focus on funding efforts to address flooding, affordable housing, mobility, high-capacity transit, parks, libraries, and existing infrastructure. City departments identified more than $3 billion in needs during the next five years. From that list, City staff developed a $640 million bond package to serve as a starting point for the Task Force to consider.

While the Task Force develops its Council recommendations for the bond package, its 13 appointed members want to better understand what City infrastructure needs are most important to Austin residents.

Toward that end, the Task Force has scheduled seven town halls throughout the city, taking place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the following dates:
  • Monday, Nov. 13, at Dove Springs Recreation Center, 5801 Ainez Drive
  • Thursday, Nov. 16, at Little Walnut Creek Library, 835 W. Rundberg Lane
  • Tuesday, Nov. 28, at University Hills Branch Library, 4721 Loyola Lane
  • Wednesday, Nov. 29, at ACC South Campus, 1820 W. Stassney Lane
  • Thursday, Nov. 30, Carver Museum, 1165 Angelina St.
  • Monday, Dec. 4, Spicewood Springs Library, 8637 Spicewood Springs Road
  • Thursday, Dec. 7, at Hampton Branch Library at Oak Hill, 5125 Convict Hill Road
