Alert: Austin Water issues citywide boil water notice

Early this morning, Austin Water issued a city-wide boil water notice for all customers in the Austin area. This is an unprecedented event for our water utility and community.
The recent rains have washed a historic amount of soil, silt, and debris into the Highland Lakes, which is where Austin Water gets water to provide to customers. Austin Water can no longer keep up with the demand for water and filter it at the level required by law and Austin Water standards.
Until these conditions improve, and in an abundance of caution, all Austin Water customers should boil their water before ingesting or drink bottled water.
You can help yourself and your family by following these steps:
- Reduce water use as much as possible to ensure adequate supply is available for basic needs, fire protection, public health, and safety.
- Water for drinking, cooking, and for making ice should be boiled and cooled prior to consumption. The water should be brought to a vigorous, rolling boil for three minutes to ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes. In lieu of boiling water, you may use bottled water.
- Bring water from home to work to ensure you stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Businesses should not use drinking fountains or soda fountains that rely on tap water.
Austin Water staff is monitoring the situation and will be providing regular updates to staff in the Emergency Operations Center. The City of Austin and Austin Water are also working in coordination with public health and safety partners in the region to keep the public informed. The boil water notice will be lifted once Austin Water can stabilize the treatment systems. Austin Water will notify residents when the water is safe for consumption and it is no longer necessary to boil the water.
For more information and frequently asked questions about boil water notices visit AustinTexas.gov/boilH2O. Updates will be posted daily by 4 p.m. at this site. For questions or concerns, please contact 3-1-1.

Parking meters activated today near Austin High School
Parking meters were activated today for the areas highlighted in blue. Red dots indicate locations of pay stations.
In accordance with an interlocal agreement between the City of Austin and the Austin Independent School District, Austin Transportation recently installed parking meters along Stephen F. Austin Drive. Austin Transportation activated those meters today, along with recently installed meters in the parking lot underneath MoPac, and along Veterans Drive, Atlanta Street, Foster Avenue, Deep Eddy Avenue and Hearn Street. The hours for these meters are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Metering helps relieve congestion and incentivizes efficient use of parking spaces by establishing locations, time limitations and penalties for those who do not abide by established regulations.
In August 2017, AISD approached the City about metering Stephen F. Austin Boulevard, a privately maintained school road, and City Council authorized this partnership on Aug. 30, 2018. The goal of these discussions has been to provide adequate parking for Austin High School students while ensuring there is enough turnover for the public to park and visit the trails and nearby areas. In order to achieve this and prevent competition for nearby parking between the public and students who have not obtained parking permits from Austin High School, Austin Transportation proposed the additional meters on nearby streets.
The metered streets, excluding Stephen F. Austin Drive and the lot underneath MoPac, are now part of the Colorado River Area Parking and Transportation Management District (PTMD), which allocates 51 percent of the fees collected, less City expenses, to be used on infrastructure projects within the area. These may include, but are not limited to, maintenance and upgrades to the Butler Hike and Bike Trail. All revenue generated by the meters on Stephen F. Austin Drive, minus City expenses, is the sole property of AISD. The lot underneath MoPac is owned by the State of Texas and is not part of the PTMD.

Signal improvements complete along Quinlan Park Road
An upgraded left-turn signal flashes a yellow arrow at Quinlan Park Road and Steiner Ranch Road.
Our Arterial Management Division has upgraded the left-turn signal heads along Quinlan Park Road so that they have flashing yellow arrow phases for improved safety. Side street signals have also been updated to reflect current striping and signal operation. Staff have implemented timing plans for all three traffic signals on Quinlan Park Road for smoother traffic flow and reduced delay. The pedestrian beacon at Canyon Glen is timed to allow for improved northbound vehicular flow during the morning peak period from Monday to Friday.
Please bear with us during daytime hours as side streets will see longer wait times as a result of signal coordination. In other words, we try not to allow signals on Quinlan Park Road to turn red for one vehicle on the side street, so that we can maintain windows for green lights for through traffic on Quinlan Park Road. We have attempted to keep any increase in side street delay to a minimum and hope the progression along Quinlan Park Road will make a significant impact to the overall intersection delay for all residents.
Learn more about how the Arterial Management Division works to manage mobility and safety for all modes of travel on Austin’s arterial roadways (which are intended to carry higher amounts of traffic at a higher speed than neighborhood streets).
