Safety Spotlight: New pedestrian hybrid beacon on Springdale Road

Crossing Springdale Road just got a lot safer, thanks to a new pedestrian hybrid beacon that ATD activated south of Rogge Lane in mid-September. The PHB creates a convenient, signalized crossing in the area, which is home to a recently constructed multifamily development on the east side of Springdale Road. The new crossing is likely already being used by students and families walking to and from Pecan Springs Elementary School on Rogge Lane.

Pedestrian hybrid beacons are button-activated signals which allow pedestrians to safely cross busy roadways where there is no traffic signal nearby. The speed and volume of traffic on Springdale Road, along with the lack of a signalized crossing option closer than 2,500 feet, made this location a recommended candidate for a PHB. Funding came from the Quarter Cent Fund, which was created when Capital Metro designated 25 percent of its one-cent sales tax toward transit and mobility projects between 2001 and 2004.

Despite being the Austin Mobility News "Safety Spotlight," this PHB is only one of many that ATD has turned on in the past few weeks. This list includes new PHBs operating on Pleasant Valley Road near Village Square, and Far West Boulevard near Northledge Drive.

ACL is around the corner, and this mobility guide offers a shortcut

Mobility options for getting to and from Austin City Limits include transit, bike-sharing, car-sharing and more.
Austin City Limits is happening over the next two weekends, and visitors are starting to pour in to Austin for the annual festivities. With this in mind, ATD has put together a menu of mobility options for visitors and residents alike.

The guide suggests ways to get to and from the crowded festival that don't involve driving alone in a personal vehicle or, in most cases, hunting for a parking spot near the festival. The list includes transit; bike-sharing; car-sharing; transportation network companies; taxicabs; pedicabs; electric, low-speed vehicles; limousines; and more.

Free shuttles to ACL from Republic Square Park, located downtown at 5th and Guadalupe streets, will run continuously each day of the festival, starting at 10:30 a.m. We suggest taking advantage of the shuttle to take the headache out of getting to the festival entrance.

National Night Out is a nationwide event that promotes police-community partnerships and awareness about crime prevention activities. Other participants include UTPD, APD, Austin-Travis County EMS, SURE Walk and more.

At the event, ATD will conduct surveys on street lighting in West campus, as part of a study to better understand how pedestrian lighting may improve existing conditions related to crime and traffic safety.

Capital Metro expanding free on-demand pickup service today

A shuttle for Pickup by Cap Metro waits on the street
Capital Metro is expanding its free ride-hailing pilot program Pickup beginning today. The service now operates Monday to Saturdays, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Pickup by Cap Metro is scheduled to operate until May 2018.

Pickup is not only extending its operating hours but also adding MLK Station to its service zone, giving MetroRail riders the opportunity to get to and from the station easily. The on-demand vehicles will continue to serve the area from the intersection of Manor Road and Airport Boulevard to the I-35 access road north of Rutherford Lane.

Launched in June, Pickup previously operated Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The popular service reached six-month ridership goals within its first two months of service. With the addition of MetroRail’s MLK Station to its service zone, Cap Metro is looking to test Pickup’s effectiveness as a first-mile, last-mile solution.

To access the service, riders need to download the app from their app store (both iOS and Android), register for an account and request a trip from their pickup point at a time they want and to a destination of their choosing. Their trip will then be matched with other travelers heading to the same destination, and the Pickup vehicle will arrive within 15 minutes. Riders without access to the smartphone app can call 512-369-6200.
