Provide input at next week's East 51st Street project open house
The City of Austin is hosting an open house for the public to give feedback on the design plans for proposed changes on East 51st Street from I-35 to Berkman Drive, as well as provide input on public art opportunities. Share feedback at four upcoming substandard street open houses
The Austin Transportation Department is hosting four public open houses this month as part of the 2016 Mobility Bond for substandard streets. In our first series of open houses, we heard about these streets’ needs and existing conditions. Now, we want the community’s feedback on proposed recommendations.
Cooper Lane (Dittmar Road to Matthews Lane)
Latta Drive and Brush Country Road (William Cannon Drive to Tiffany Drive)
Davis Lane (Brodie Lane to West Gate Boulevard and Leo Street to Manchaca Road)
FM 1626 (Manchaca Road to I-35)
Open houses for Circle S Road, Johnny Morris Road and Ross Road are planned for October.
The 2016 Mobility Bond dedicates $11 million to substandard streets and capital renewal programs, including the creation of preliminary engineering reports for nine substandard streets.

Share your thoughts on Austin's bicycle signals in a brief survey
Bicycle signals can be identified by a bicycle silhouette on the signal face.
Last summer, Austin Transportation installed bicycle signal faces at 12 intersections in the Central Austin area. Now, we are asking you to provide feedback on the signals by filling out a short survey before Oct. 5, 2018.
The bicycle signals are located at:
- Third and Brazos streets
- Third and Colorado streets
- Third Street and Congress Avenue
- Third and Guadalupe streets
- Third and Lavaca streets
- Fourth and Red River streets
- 24th and Rio Grande streets
- Airport and Wilshire boulevards
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Rio Grande Street
- Morrow Street and North Lamar Boulevard
- West Cesar Chavez Street and B.R. Reynolds Drive
- West Cesar Chavez Street and Sandra Muraida Way
By guiding bicycle traffic approaching signalized intersections, bicycle signal faces can increase safety and improve traffic operations for both bicyclists and motorists.
These bicycle signals are part of a collaborative research study between Austin Transportation and the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Texas at Austin. The study is measuring user compliance and safety on the road as well as public perception and knowledge regarding bicycle signals. A preliminary survey was released in January 2017 before the bicycle signals were installed. The purpose of the current survey is to gauge whether public perception and knowledge have changed since the installations.

"Stay in the Loop" with TxDOT's new Loop 360 program website
The site will provide up-to-date project information, including the latest news and event announcements, as well as details about the program approach and process.
Changes are coming to one of the state’s most congested roadways. Design work is about to begin on the Loop 360 corridor, and the Texas Department of Transportation is launching a new website, Loop360Project.com, to keep drivers, homeowners and businesses in the loop as the projects move forward.
TxDOT, in conjunction with the City of Austin, will upgrade nine intersections along the Loop 360 corridor, including Westlake Drive, Spicewood Springs Road, Lakewood Drive, RM 2222, Courtyard Drive, Walsh Tarlton Lane, Lost Creek Boulevard, Westbank Drive and RM 2244. These intersection upgrades will collectively provide substantial mobility benefits for local residents, commuters and others who use the roadway.
As part of the 2016 Mobility Bond Program, the city of Austin is contributing $46 million toward improvements at four intersections along Loop 360: Westlake Drive, Courtyard Drive, Lakewood Drive, and Spicewood Springs Road. See the mobility calendar below for more details on a public workshop for Westlake Drive that will take place this Thursday!

Apply on behalf of an Austin school for a Bright Green Future Grant
Recipients at Kealing Middle School established a Cycle Academy to help students develop safe biking skills and teach them how to calculate their carbon footprint.
The City of Austin is currently accepting applications for Bright Green Future Grants, a competitive program that provides funding for school-based sustainability projects up to $3,000. The application window closes on Oct. 1, 2018, so apply now!
The program is open to all Austin Independent School District and Austin area charter and private schools, as well as those in cities – such as Round Rock and Pflugerville – that utilize services through Austin Energy, Austin Water Utility, or Austin Resource Recovery. Anyone representing the school can submit the application, including teachers, students, parents, administrators and nonprofit organizations.
The program was designed to recognize and support innovative projects that will inspire students to become lifelong environmental stewards. Proposed projects should actively engage students and members of the community with hands-on involvement and learning. Examples include composting systems, rainwater harvesting, organic gardens, rain gardens, bicycle academies, and wildlife habitats. The program is sponsored by the City of Austin’s Office of Sustainability and funded by Austin Resource Recovery, Watershed Protection, Public Works, Austin Transportation and Austin Energy.
