2016 Mobility Bond: Come by our Spicewood Springs Road open house to review safety and mobility recommendations
Join Austin Transportation for the second Spicewood Springs Road Regional Mobility Project open house to review and provide feedback on three draft options for mobility and safety improvements to Spicewood Springs Road.
The 2016 Mobility Bond provides $17 million for preliminary engineering, design and construction of safety and mobility improvements on Spicewood Springs Road between Loop 360 and Mesa Drive.
The project team used input collected from the community last year, along with technical assessments, to develop these options. This fall, staff will finalize one option that will move into the design phase of the project. If you can’t attend the open house in person, all open house exhibits will be available for review on the project website beginning Aug. 30. Feedback can be submitted in person at the open house or on the project website from Aug. 30 through Sept. 14. Learn more on the Spicewood Springs Road Regional Mobility Project website.

City’s sustainable commute incentive program wins national award

Austin Transportation's Transportation Demand Management Program Manager Tien-Tien Chan receives the award on behalf of the City of Austin at the ACT International Conference.
The City of Austin’s Smart Commute Rewards Program recently received national recognition from the Association for Commuter Transportation for doubling employee carpool trips in 2017. As part of the City’s incentive program, employees are encouraged and rewarded to get to and from work in sustainable ways (transit, carpool, vanpool, bike walk) at least one day a week. Through the program, employees connected with coworkers along their routes and arranged carpools for their commutes.
“The City of Austin is honored to receive this award. The City of Austin strives to be a leader in commute trip reduction efforts and continues to recognize employees that take the effort to commute sustainably,” said Robert Spillar, Director of Austin Transportation.
The Association for Commuter Transportation is an international association and leading advocate for commuter transportation and transportation demand management. To learn more about how the City of Austin promotes transportation demand management, visit AustinTexas.gov/TDM.

TxDOT expands HERO program to help stranded motorists seven days a week
The Texas Department of Transportation's HERO patrol service program, which assists stranded motorists on selected highways, has expanded to seven days a week. The free roadside assistance service now patrols I-35 from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on both Saturdays and Sundays. In addition to the expanded hours, the HERO program has increased its fleet from 24 to 26 trucks. A dedicated debris trailer has been added to help remove debris hazards from the roadway and shoulders, to prevent further incidents from occurring. A second trailer will be available to handle lane closures that last beyond two hours.
The HERO program, in partnership with the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, patrols 138 miles of I-35, US 183, US 290, SH 71 and MoPac, and has provided over 22,000 total services in assisting stranded motorists and clearing minor crashes throughout the Capital region since October 2017.
Motorists can call 512-974-HERO (4376) between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, if they need assistance. Roadside services include gas, jump starts, tire changes and more.

Take a transit tour of Capital Metro's Art Boxes this Saturday
Enjoy a transit tour of Art Boxes! Earlier this summer, Capital Metro selected art by 12 Central Texans to beautify utility boxes at MetroRapid stations in Austin. Fourteen boxes are painted or wrapped with the artists' original designs as part of a grant that the transportation agency received from the Federal Transit Administration. Austin Transportation participated in planning, permitting and coordination for this project.
Check out six of the Art Boxes while enjoying a ride on the MetroRapid 801. To join the tour, meet at Little Texas Station this Saturday, Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. The ride will stop for viewings at Little Texas, St. Edward's and SOCO stations. Participants will receive a free Transit Day Pass for this event. Some of the artists will attend and answer questions about their work and the process of creating an Art Box.
For more information about the tour, visit the Eventbrite or Facebook event pages. Learn more about the Art Boxes and their locations at CapMetro.org/ArtBox.
