The City of Austin and the Downtown Austin Alliance are making more City-owned, downtown parking available to service-industry professionals and other evening workers by expanding the City’s Affordable Parking Program. This partnership is part of the next phase of the Downtown Austin Alliance’s Downtown Parking Strategy.

The Affordable Parking Program is intended to make downtown parking more accessible and provide financial relief to those who help make downtown hospitality and tourism possible. Starting today, the City of Austin and the Downtown Austin Alliance have significantly expanded the program to include affordable evening parking at the City Hall garage and the One Texas Center garage, across Lady Bird Lake on Barton Springs Road. The City of Austin is providing the facilities, while the Downtown Austin Alliance and its transportation management association Movability are working with local businesses and directing downtown workers to the program to maximize its potential.

Today’s expansion more than doubles the capacity of the Affordable Parking Program, increasing it from approximately 200 spaces to approximately 500 spaces. An application is required to participate in the Affordable Parking Program, with a monthly fee ranging from $35 (Waller Creek Center, City Hall and One Texas Center) to $65 (State of Texas Garage North). Applications and more information, including hours, are available at austintexas.gov/affordableparking.

Austin Transportation kicks off smart parking meter demonstration

Map showing that four spaces will be used at the northwest corner of 6th and Nueces Streets.
Map showing that 8 spaces will be used at the northeast corner 2nd and Colorado streets.
The meters will be deployed at a set of adjacent spaces in each location.

Austin Transportation has partnered with Municipal Parking Services to deploy six smart parking meters in two locations: West Sixth Street and Colorado Street. The demonstration project launches today and will operate for eight weeks, through Sept. 24. The purpose of this demonstration is to test smart parking meter technology and collect data about parking turnover rates and revenue. Residents and visitors can pay for the parking spaces using cash or credit/debit cards.

The smart parking meters will collect some anonymized information to better understand their accuracy. While Austin Transportation will not be using information from the smart meters to issue parking citations, parking enforcement personnel will continue to write citations for parking violations that they see. In-person surveys will also be collected along West Sixth Street and Colorado Street to gauge public awareness and opinion of the demonstration.

2016 Mobility Bond: Come to our Rutledge Spur Open House

The City of Austin is analyzing Rutledge Spur as part of the 2016 Mobility Bond for substandard streets. We have been evaluating road conditions between Lakeline Mall Drive and Ranch Road 620 to identify potential mobility and safety improvements. Late last year, we heard about Rutledge Spur’s needs and existing conditions. Next week, we will be hosting a public meeting to present our recommendations to the community and get feedback. Rutledge Spur is the first of the eight 2016 Mobility Bond Substandard Street Projects that we will be hosting public meetings for this summer/fall.

Attend our public meeting

A survey will be available at the meeting for you to share your feedback on the Rutledge Spur recommendations.

Can’t drop by in person? Visit the Rutledge Spur Substandard Street Project website between Aug. 7-21 to view the recommendations and take our survey online.

New art boxes liven up commutes on MetroRapid routes

This summer, there's no need to go to an art gallery to find great art! Just hop on MetroRapid Routes 801 or 803 to see artistically decorated utility boxes, or art boxes, painted by local artists.

Capital Metro found talented artists from Central Texas to create custom art installations to enhance several of its MetroRapid stations on nearby utility boxes. The art boxes add vibrancy to the experience of riding MetroRapid and reflect the character of each station's neighborhood.

Fourteen boxes have been painted or wrapped by 12 selected Central Texas artists as part of a grant that Capital Metro received from the Federal Transit Administration. Learn more about Capital Metro's Art Box program.
