New ordinance governing dockless mobility services in effect, licensing process underway

City Council adopted an ordinance at the April 26 meeting governing the commercial use of sidewalks and City right of way. The ordinance authorizes a citywide service license for dockless mobility operations, which includes dockless scooter and bicycle services.

At the same time, Austin Transportation is working to establish the license and permitting process for these services as soon as administratively feasible. Austin Transportation will continue to work with operators, stakeholders and the public on next steps for the safe provision of dockless mobility services.

Austin Transportation concluded the public engagement process with the fifth and final listening session at Earth Day on Sunday, April 29. A preliminary summary of the feedback is available at AustinTexas.gov/DocklessMobility. This community feedback will inform the future of dockless mobility services in Austin.

Austin Transportation’s latest annual report is now online at austinmobilityreport.com. The report showcases the department’s accomplishments in 2017 as it continues its efforts to provide a safe, efficient, innovative, cost-effective and sustainable transportation system for the Austin community. This website is the first paperless release of the department’s annual report.

In 2017, Austin built on previous gains, kicking 2016 Mobility Bond implementation into high gear, making on-the-ground safety improvements through the ongoing Vision Zero Program, and harnessing excitement from the previous year’s Smart Mobility Challenge into a Smart Mobility Roadmap to guide the city’s transportation future. Austin also continued to build out its all-ages-and-abilities bicycle network, while encouraging bicycling as one of ten selected Big Jump cities to double bicycle ridership by 2020.

Click above for a new animated video about the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan!
Many people have taken the opportunity to weigh in on the future of transportation in Austin through the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan online survey. Austin Transportation encourages more people to participate in this effort before the survey closes on May 31.

Participation in the survey is critical to the development of the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan, Austin’s first locally-focused comprehensive transportation plan. Launched on March 28, 2018, the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan online survey was designed to get public feedback on three different scenarios for Austin’s future transportation network. These scenarios are based on thousands of comments from public outreach in 2016 and 2017. Austin Transportation will use the feedback on these scenarios to develop the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan. Take the survey today!

If you've already taken the survey, please spread the word before it closes at the end of May! People can also take the survey while attending several upcoming community events. Visit the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan website to find a list of events.
