ATD releases Request for Information on personal delivery devices

In a move toward smart mobility, ATD has released a Request for Information on commercially available personal delivery devices. PDDs operate on sidewalks, carrying anything from takeout to groceries and small parcels. These devices have the potential to offer a first-/last-mile solution to Austin-area residents and businesses. Through this RFI, ATD seeks to gather information on PDD capabilities and to identify qualified companies willing to partner with the City to deploy a pilot project.

The City of Austin and its bike share system operator Bike Share of Austin have teamed up with the University of Texas at Austin for an 18-month pilot test of Austin B-Cycle on campus and in the West Campus neighborhood. This service expansion, launched on Feb. 14, includes nine new Austin B-cycle station locations and a new, no-cost membership for UT students.

Only five days into the pilot, 2,350 UT students had signed up for the program and taken a total of 4,793 trips. “Students are constantly on the move,” said Laura Dierenfield, Division Manager of the Active Transportation and Street Design Division. “This pilot program is intended to give students a time-competitive and hassle-free option to get from home to class, work and career-building opportunities.”

The City of Austin, owner of the Austin B-Cycle system, will evaluate the pilot program to determine how it can serve as a model for increasing access to bike share for other colleges and universities elsewhere in the City. Austin B-cycle is a partnership between the City of Austin and Bike Share of Austin, the nonprofit operator.

UT students can enroll online or through the B-Cycle app for a no-charge annual membership with Austin B-cycle. UT faculty and staff are eligible for half off the Local365 annual membership. Anyone with a B-Cycle membership is eligible for unlimited trips of up to an hour between stations as well as the B-connected program that recognizes memberships in partner B-cycle systems including San Antonio, Houston, and Ft. Worth.

For better streets, send us feedback on the draft Austin Street Design Guide

Help improve Austin's streets by giving feedback on the draft Austin Street Design Guide. Released last summer, the draft offers a guide for City staff and street design professionals to a consistent approach in street design, and includes proposed street cross-sections. The City is currently piloting these designs through capital projects as well as the development process.

View the draft guide and take the survey to give comments and suggestions on the Street Design Guide. The comment period will remain open through March 2018. For more information, visit AustinTexas.gov/StreetDesignGuide.

Support safe driving habits with Vision Zero yard signs

Custom yard signs reminding drivers to slow down
Increase safety and awareness in your neighborhood with custom yard signs.
"Watch for ________!" Could your neighborhood use some reminders for drivers to be cautious? Fill in the blanks on these yard signs with help from the Vision Zero yard sign pilot program. Round up your neighbors to make it happen! Each neighborhood should designate a lead resident to coordinate with City staff on planning a yard sign decoration event and establishing a timeline for sign display.

If you're interested, contact Ashley Bischoff, Vision Zero Outreach Coordinator, at ashley.bischoff@austintexas.gov for more information.

Earlier this month, ATD participated in an "Ask Me Anything" discussion on Reddit about traffic signals. If you missed the discussion, you can still read our traffic signal engineers' answers about what's involved with signal timing in Austin—a lot!

Check it out: How the City of Austin encourages its employees to adopt sustainable commutes

As one of the largest employers in Austin, the City of Austin seeks to lead by example. That's why it carried out a transportation demand management pilot program last year called Smart Commute, helping City employees commute sustainably by incentivizing them to take transit, bike, walk, carpool, vanpool or telework rather than drive alone.

Transportation demand management is a technical term for a simple concept – managing the demand of the transportation system to increase system efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, enhance quality of life and more!

RideAmigos, which managed the digital platform through which employees tracked their trips, has compiled some of the pilot's beneficial outcomes in a blog post. "In the first six months since launching nearly 1,300 City of Austin employees opted into the program, which has generated fantastic results," wrote RideAmigos. "Over those six months their efforts resulted in about 380 tons of CO2 emission reductions. Employees also saved over $800,000 (about $600 per participant), all while collectively burning nearly 3 million calories."
