Earlier this month, the City of Austin launched an interactive web portal called Project Explorer that allows people to easily track the City's progress on 2016 Mobility Bond Projects. Now, to make it even easier to stay up to date with these projects, the City has released a short video tutorial on how to use the tracking tool to explore each project and program funded by the bond. Click the screenshot above to watch the video!

Project Explorer allows users to search projects by location, project type, project phase and City Council district. A project details page also provides the project budget, funding and a public contact, among other information. Project Explorer will be updated monthly. More information about the implementation of the 2016 Mobility Bond, including background, context and updates, is available at AustinTexas.gov/2016Bond.

Help shape the future of Austin's streets by providing your input on the Austin Street Design Guide

Interested in the future of Austin’s streets? Don’t forget that the pilot of the Austin Street Design Guide is underway and we’re looking for YOUR feedback! To download the guide, send your thoughts to the project team or request a presentation for your organization, visit the Austin Street Design Guide webpage.

The Austin Street Design Guide is a modern guide for street design that considers street function, context and all transportation modes. Its purpose is to assist City staff and private sector street design professionals in applying a consistent approach to street design. The guide contains street cross-sections and serves as a precursor to updates to the City’s Transportation Criteria Manual. The City is piloting these street designs through capital projects as well as the development process through March 2018.

On PARK(ing) Day, reimagine public parking spaces as public parks

ATD invites the public to reclaim, reimagine and reinvent parking spaces as temporary miniature parks, or “parklets,” for PARK(ing) Day. To be held this year on Friday, Sept. 15, PARK(ing) Day is an annual, worldwide event which generates public engagement and critical dialogue on the need for public, open spaces in urban areas.

Thinking of organizing an event? The first step is to read the application packet. Participants are encouraged to submit applications by Friday, Sept. 1; the final deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Participation is not limited to setting up a parklet. Visitors are welcome to stop by and interact with these installations. This year’s participants include the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Boomspace ATX and Austin Public Library. See the Facebook event for details on participants and their parklet locations. ATD TDM Program Manager Tien-Tien Chan accepts her award from ACT National Board President Rob Henry.

Congratulations to our own Tien-Tien Chan for receiving the distinction of Emerging Leader in Transportation Demand Management (TDM) from the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT)!

Chan currently serves as Deputy Chair of the Transportation Research Board's TDM Committee and Board President for the Center for Transportation Demand Management, a new nonprofit associated with ACT. With an unwavering commitment to improving commuters' lives, Chan brings a wealth of results to the City of Austin and ATD, where she is TDM Program Manager.

ACT is an international association and leading advocate for commuter transportation and TDM. "Since I first met Tien-Tien, she has always asked, 'How can I help?' and, 'How can I move the TDM field forward?'" said ACT National Board President Rob Henry.

TDM is a technical term for a simple concept – managing the demand of the transportation system to increase system efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, enhance quality of life and more! Related programs include the City's Air Quality Program, Smart Trips, and more.

ATD reminds drivers to be mindful of students as schools reopen

Many students return to school this week, including those attending Austin Independent School District schools, where classes started today. Having tested its flashing school zone traffic signals last week, ATD has also been using its Dynamic Message Signs to remind drivers to be mindful of students walking to school, crossing the streets and entering and exiting school buses. Thanks for being cautious during your commutes!

Check it out: New Capital Metro Round Rock bus service starts and MetroRapid runs later and more often

Today and over the weekend, Capital Metro expanded mobility options both regionally and to the heart of Austin. Here's a rundown from Capital Metro:

MetroRapid Frequency Increases
The improvements to the MetroRapid service grew out of the Connections 2025 Transit Plan, which is designed to create a more frequent, more reliable and better connected bus system. Frequency increases mean that both Routes 801 and 803 will run every 10 minutes between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and every 15 minutes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the weekend. Late-night service will operate until 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, giving riders a safer and less expensive transportation alternative when going out after dark.

Fixed-route Service in Round Rock
Capital Metro launched the City of Round Rock's fixed-route bus service today. The agreement to provide the new service is the first Capital Metro has reached with a city outside its service area and the agency is discussing similar arrangements with other cities throughout Central Texas.
