ATD completed major safety improvements at Lamar Boulevard and Parmer Lane on Saturday, July 8, making it the fourth intersection the department has addressed as part of its Transportation Safety Improvement Program. These projects are intended to help Austin reach zero traffic deaths by 2025, a goal set out in the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan.

Improvements at Parmer and Lamar include:
  • Reconstructed right-turn islands at the northwest and southeast corners of the intersection to facilitate “smart” right turns.
  • High-visibility continental crosswalks at all pedestrian crossing points.
  • Sidewalks at the northwest and northeast corners of the intersection.
  • A new traffic signal on Lamar Boulevard at the Walmart driveway.
  • A new pedestrian hybrid beacon at John B. Connally High School.
You’re Invited: 5th Street Conversion Meeting

In an effort to continue improving mobility and traffic flow through Downtown Austin, ATD plans to convert E. 5th Street, between Brazos Street and the I-35 Southbound Frontage Road, from one-way traffic to two-way traffic. Through this section, there will be one westbound lane and two eastbound lanes.

This conversion is intended to improve movement through the Downtown grid system by better accommodating high traffic volumes and providing more traffic movement options at intersections. In particular, City staff expects significant improvements when 6th Street is closed for traffic during entertainment hours. This project is scheduled to begin in August 2017.

ATD staff members are coordinating with the Downtown Austin Alliance to meet with property and business owners along 5th Street to discuss the project and respond to any questions and concerns. For those interested in learning more about the project, there will be an open house meeting on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 12 p.m. at the Austin Chamber Board Room located at 535 E. 5th Street on the second floor.

Add your input on Austin's Street Design Guide draft

Interested in the future of Austin’s streets? Don’t forget that the pilot of the Austin Street Design Guide is underway and we’re looking for YOUR feedback! Whether planning for a new street or the retrofit of an existing street, this guide is a first step in the application of a consistent and predictable approach to street design.

The City will pilot these street designs through capital projects as well as the development process through the end of 2017 in coordination with the development of the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan and CodeNEXT. To download the guide, send your thoughts to the project team or request a presentation for your organization, visit us here.

Dive into a new carpool or vanpool this summer

Air Quality logo

Sharing a ride is a great way to make driving more enjoyable. Plus, it helps to keep the air clean and can save you money. Carpooling with just one other person can cut your daily commute costs in half. And if all drivers doubled up, it would cut traffic congestion and air pollution substantially.

Other reasons to carpool or vanpool:

  • Let someone else do the driving while you eat breakfast, catch up on emails or take a nap.
  • Carpooling or vanpooling can help significantly reduce the amount of pollutants put into the air each year.
  • Less wear and tear on your car! Also, some insurance companies offer low-mileage discounts to policyholders who carpool to work or drive a lower-than-average number of miles each year.
Visit CommuteSolutions.com to learn more about carpooling, including carpooling basics and carpool etiquette. Capital Metro sponsors a vanpool program! The public can register by calling 512-477-RIDE.
