Two City of Austin handbooks to help people plan, design, and permit two types of sidewalk cafes are now available at austintexas.gov/sidewalkcafe, The new user-friendly handbooks contain a wealth of photos, illustrative drawings, and graphics. An updated, easy-to-use permit application form also is available online.

Sidewalk cafes and street patios add vibrancy, amenities and people to Austin streets. They support local businesses, create a sense of place in neighborhoods and business districts, beautify the streetscape, and create walkable destinations for residents. A sidewalk cafe utilizes a portion of the sidewalk immediately adjacent to a business licensed to serve food and beverages.

A street patio (a.k.a. “parklet”) is a type of sidewalk café created in street space formerly devoted to parking. By converting street space to a use that serves people, street patios can help make cities more welcoming and people-friendly. Learn more here.

Parking enforcement officers help save a life after CPR training

Parking Enforcement Officer Belinda Thompson accepted an ATD employee recognition award on behalf of the group at a recent staff safety meeting.
Last week, a group of ATD parking enforcement officers were recognized in front of their peers for acting quickly in making life-saving decisions.

In January, officers Ariana Fisher, Belinda Thompson and Martina Dabrowska-Saltzman were on duty when they noticed a man on the ground who did not appear to be breathing and was unresponsive. Remembering their ATD-administered CPR training, the group sprung into action: Thompson called 911 while Saltzman began performing CPR and Fisher held the man's wrist to feel for a pulse. During CPR, the man began to gasp for air and the officers helped him expel what had been restricting his airway.

The group played a vital role in saving a man's life by providing immediate care and ensuring he was was responsive until more help arrived. ATD provides CPR training to its employees so that they can be prepared when such situations arise. Even if you're not trained, you may be able to help save a life in an emergency by administering simple "hands-only" CPR. Watch this short video by the American Heart Association to learn how.

National Bike Month is ending, but you can keep up the momentum

Photo of a person riding a bike in a protected bike lane on Guadalupe Street.

National Bike Month brought a lot of extra excitement to riding on two wheels, especially if you took part in Bike to School Day on May 10 or Bike to Work Day on May 19. In fact, according to data collected at permanent bicycle counters around the city, this year's Bike to Work Day saw a nearly 40 percent spike in bicycle ridership when compared to the rolling average, even despite the threat of rain that morning.

Although the month celebrating this clean and fun mode of transportation is wrapping up, you can keep up the momentum by biking to work or taking short trips regularly using Austin's ever-improving bicycle network.

For encouragement every time you ride, download the RideReport app and provide the City of Austin with valuable information about which facilities you use and where facilities could be added or improved.

Check it out: Capital Metro is "bringing ride hailing to public transportation" with new pilot program

Last week, Capital Metro announced the pilot launch of its new Pickup app, an on-demand service that will take you "from your front step to anywhere within its service zone." You can request a ride directly from your phone. The pilot will begin on June 6 and will be available three days a week: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. For a limited time, Capital Metro is offering the service free of charge.

The Pickup service will replace Capital Metro's MetroFlex Upper Eastside pilot route and serve the same area of Northeast Austin: from the intersection of Manor Road and Airport Boulevard to the I-35 access road north of Rutherford Lane. It includes the Mueller Development, Capital Plaza, Coronado Hills and University Hills, and Cameron Road near Dobie Middle School.

Download the app from your phone's app store, register for an account and you'll be ready to go. Book a ride and Capital Metro can be there within 15 minutes. Those without access to the smartphone app may call 512-369-6200.
