SELF-ASSESSMENT FOR NAP PROCESSES: A LEARNING TOOL FOR IMPROVING EFFECTIVENESS
The NAP Global Network’s South–South peer learning events incorporate a variety of methods to support NAP actors from different countries in building their knowledge and learning from one another. One of these emerging tools is the self-assessment process, which was developed by the NAP Global Network, to help participants consolidate new ideas and identify ways to incorporate them in NAP processes after the event. Learn more about this approach to learning in our latest blog.
WEBINAR | LINKING NATIONAL AND SUB-NATIONAL ADAPTATION: VERTICAL INTEGRATION IN NAP PROCESSES
To be effective, NAP processes must reflect local and sub-national dimensions in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating adaptation. On September 18, the Secretariat will co-host a webinar with the NAP Global Support Programme looking at different aspects of vertical integration in NAP processes. Interested in participating? NETWORK SECRETARIAT IN ACTION
- The NAP Global Network, in partnership with the South African Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and the National NAP Global Network, hosted a Winter School for South African government officials at the University of Cape Town. The workshop provided an overview of the latest relevant climate science as well as sector-specific case studies and experiences on the use of vulnerability and climate information for practitioners engaged at various levels of decision making.
- The Government of Benin validated a study to help integrate gender considerations into its NAP process during a national workshop in Cotonou. The analysis, which was developed with technical support from the NAP Global Network’s Country Support Hub, provides an overview of the status of the NAP process and explores the differentiated impacts of climate change on women and men in Benin as well as the challenges and opportunities for integrating gender considerations into Benin’s NAP process. Recommendations were identified to enable a gender-responsive NAP process in Benin.
- The Secretariat co-organized a Capacity-building Knowledge to Action Day during the UNFCCC’s Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week in Brazil. Read the latest op-ed by Daniel Morchain, an Associate with IISD’s Resilience Program who participated in this event, explaining why climate change adaptation should be putting people first (original available in Portuguese). The Secretariat will also be in Thailand for another Capacity-building Knowledge to Action Day in the context of the Asia-Pacific Climate Week in September. The findings of these events will be presented at COP 25 in Chile.
- The Government of Malawi validated its NAP Framework in a national workshop this month, developed with support from the NAP Global Network’s Country Support Hub. The document establishes the approach for the NAP process, which aims to enable Malawi to address its medium- and long-term needs to adapt to climate change.
- The Government of Ghana will be reviewing an initial draft of a NAP-private sector engagement strategy this month, developed with the support of the NAP Global Network US In-Country Support Program and Ghana’s Environmental Protection Agency, during a two-day validation workshop. This will be followed by a one-day validation workshop to finalize an adaptation plan that has been drafted for the infrastructure sector (with a focus on water, energy and transportation).
- The Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia, in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, has developed practical tools and methods to incorporate climate change adaptation into planning and budgeting processes. The process is being supported by the NAP Global Network, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). More than 40 planning and budget experts are being trained in the use of the tool.
- The NAP Global Network is supporting the Fijian government with the development of a Communications Strategy for its NAP process. To inform the strategy, an awareness-raising workshop about the NAP process was held in the Western Division of Fiji in August. The workshop provided an opportunity to receive inputs from stakeholders at the sub-national level and to clarify their communications needs.
