Chemicals and waste: need for greater attention to scaling-up and sustainability
The Chemicals and Waste Focal Area study concluded that while many projects have demonstrated the collection and destruction of hazardous chemicals and reduced environmental stress, they have been less successful at scaling up. More attention needs to be paid to catalyzing broader action and impact in the focal area. Read more.

Private sector sees GEF's role to be critical in creating a level playing field
The evaluation of GEF's Engagement with the Private Sector concluded that while GEF should continue to engage the private sector using a variety of influencing models, operational constraints often prevent such engagement. Creating a level playing field is a critical role for the GEF to encourage more private sector investment. Read more.

Updated Terminal Evaluation Guidelines
The GEF Monitoring and Evaluation Policy (2010) specifies that each GEF full-sized project shall be evaluated at the end of implementation. The updated and revised guidelines for terminal evaluations support GEF Agencies in conducting terminal evaluations in a consistent manner. Find the guidelines here.

Rapid Impact Evaluation
Rapid Impact Evaluation (RIE) is an impact assessment method based on triangulating judgements of separate groups of experts. The Evaluation of the Programmatic Approaches in the GEF applied the RIE framework to obtain estimates of GHG emission reductions attributable to an energy efficiency program. The Sixth Comprehensive Evaluation of the GEF is underway to inform the replenishment process on the GEF performance and progress in achieving impact. We shared the emerging findings at the first replenishment meeting in March. We will present findings of completed evaluations to the GEF Council in May, and plan to have the full OPS6 report in early September in time for the second meeting of the Contributing Parties of the GEF.
While delivery of this important evaluation, as well as contributing evaluations and reviews has been keeping us very occupied, we have made efforts to actively participate in knowledge sharing. In January, the book on Evaluating Climate Change Action for Sustainable Development was published and has received positive attention from the evaluation and environmental professionals. In addition, we re-launched Climate-Eval, a community of practice for evaluators and practitioners to learn about priority themes, such as transformational change, private sector investment, and local stakeholder engagement. This revitalized platform is based on our new partnership with the Evaluation and Learning Initiative of the Climate Investment Funds (CIFs). We continue to participate in the United Nations Evaluation Group (UNEG) and Evaluation Cooperation Group (ECG) meetings and are part of working groups on gender and implementation of evaluation recommendations.
We will be back in touch with the new update in summer.
