Showcase your Shire by hosting the 2018 Rural Summit

Interested in hosting the 2018 Rural Councils Victoria (RCV) Rural Summit? Then we want to hear from you.

Rural Councils Victoria is seeking Expressions of Interest from member Councils wanting to showcase their Shire by hosting the 2018 Rural Summit. With funding support on offer, hosting the RCV Rural Summit is a great way to showcase your Shire, and your organisation.

Bill changes could cripple rural Councils

Victoria’s 38 small rural Councils will suffer a significant financial blow if the State Government goes ahead with changes proposed in the State Taxation Acts Amendment Bill. Part 9 of the Bill proposes changes to the Valuation of Land Act 1960 that would see land valuations for rating and tax purposes undertaken annually, placing significant financial strain on small rural councils.

RCV's State Budget Response

In responding to the 2017-18 State Budget, RCV expressed its bitter disappointment that the $150 million Rural Community Support Fund had been overlooked, ignoring the needs of rural communities needing essential services and upgrades.

Regional and Rural Council Sustainability Program

Despite missing out on the $150 million Rural Community Support Fund, there was a $1 million commitment in the State budget to develop a Regional and Rural Council Sustainability Program, so regional Victorians can benefit from stronger local governments.

Local Government Victoria is leading a steering group that will contribute to the program's development and two delegates from RCV will participate.

Population Attraction and Retention Strategy

John Stevens from Dench McLean Carlson is set to deliver the draft report for RCV's Population Attraction and Retention Strategy (Foundation Project) in coming weeks.

Over time this project will support rural communities in building capacity and improving performance in attracting and retaining people and businesses in rural areas.​ John presented the key themes coming from the initial project work to members at the recent Mayors, Councillors and CEOs forum, which were warmly received.​
