Report: One-third of New Yorkers have high health care needs

The Robin Hood Foundation, in partnership with Columbia University and The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, recently released its quarterly Poverty Tracker report, “Special Series on Health and Health Care in New York City,” which found that one-third of New Yorkers have high health care needs. High health care needs are defined as having multiple chronic health conditions, a work-limiting health condition, and/or severe psychological distress. Other subgroups with high health care needs include older New Yorkers, U.S.-born New Yorkers and those with less education. 

The report also highlights that New Yorkers within subgroups with high health care needs, including those that are Black and Latino, are more likely to face economic disadvantage than those without, making it even more difficult to access care.

Homeless Services: The agency awarded $52.7 million to Neighborhood Association For Inter-Cultural Affairs for shelter facilities for homeless single adults.

 

TOP NEWS: U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer is pushing Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge to approve a mortgage refinancing for Co-Op City that could unlock $120 million in badly needed funds for the sprawling Bronx complex (Daily News) … A letter signed by the leaders of multiple home builder, real estate and property owner associations calls for the state to put $2 billion toward rental assistance programs, a sum Hochul included in her budget for unspecified pandemic aid (Times Union) … A series of studies found new insights about demonstrating donor impact, fostering empathy and the relative strength of competing donor communications channels (NonProfit Times) … A Hasidic Jewish school in Brooklyn recently notified parents that it will stop teaching secular studies to its eighth-graders, even though state law requires such classes, according to a new complaint filed by an education advocacy group (The City)
