2018 Annual Meeting

On April 18, 2018, the Bretton Woods Committee held its 35th Annual Meeting at the IMF Headquarters in Washington, DC, drawing an impressive line-up of speakers and over 200 Committee members and global leaders. With transformative challenges causing major changes across global economic, political, and technological spheres, this year’s conversation – Tectonic Shifts: Multilateralism in a Disrupted World – prompted timely solutions for navigating forces shaping the future of trade, finance, and development. Read more.

Member Appreciation Reception

On April 20, the Bretton Woods Committee hosted a Member Appreciation Reception in honor of the Committee’s 35th Anniversary. At the reception, the Committee recognized members of its Legislative Task Force for their service in support of our recent legislative efforts in securing a full and clean replenishment for the World Bank’s IDA fund from the United States. World Bank General Capital Increase, A Conversation with U.S. Treasury Assistant Secretary Heath P. Tarbert 

On May 17, 2018 the Committee’s Legislative Task Force held a closed-door roundtable discussion with Assistant Secretary for International Markets and Investment Policy Heath P. Tarbert and a small group of Treasury officials from the Office of Multilateral Development Banks. The conversation allowed for the U.S. Treasury team to gather insights from voices of experience as the World Bank’s general capital increase (GCI) package moves through the U.S. legislative process. Brazilian Infrastructure Investment Opportunities: Beyond the Elections 

On Thursday, June 21, the Bretton Woods Committee co-hosted a private roundtable titled, Brazilian Infrastructure Investment Opportunities: Beyond the Elections in partnership with the Council of the Americas, Oliver Wyman, and the World Bank Group. Private, public and multilateral leaders discussed ways to overcome structural hurdles to infrastructure finance and to achieve greater private sector infrastructure investment in Brazil. The discussion was co-chaired by Bretton Woods Committee Advisory Council Member, Bill Rhodes and World Bank Group CFO, Joaquim Levy. Read more.

Henry Owen Memorial 2018 Award Winners Announced

For this year’s Henry Owen Memorial Award essay contest – against the backdrop of broad-based cyclical growth, growing geopolitical and trade tensions, disruptive technologies, and a development landscape more diverse than ever – graduate students were asked to provide recommendations for how the Bretton Woods institutions can help member countries respond to these tectonic shifts with innovative trade, finance, and development policy solutions. Member Spotlight

The Bretton Woods Committee would like to congratulate the following members on their recent achievements!

Whitney Debevoise, Senior Partner at Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP, was named by The American Lawyer as a 2018 Dealmaker of the Year for his work with the Nigerian government on a landmark offering of diaspora bonds that raised $300 million for infrastructure projects in the country.  
William R. Rhodes, President & CEO of William R. Rhodes Global Advisors LLC, was awarded the Foreign Policy Association Medal which recognizes individuals who demonstrate responsible internationalism and work to expand public knowledge of international affairs.
Clare Woodman was newly appointed by Morgan Stanley as head of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, making her their first female EMEA chief. She has been a key figure in the bank's preparations for the implications of Brexit on its London operations. 
Gwen Young, Director of the Wilson Center’s Women’s Leadership Initiative and Women in Public Service Project, was named by the global network Apolitical among the top 100 most influential people in gender policy.
