A MESSAGE FROM DR. HAMILTON

Dear Families and Friends:

As many of you who are attuned to social media know, this past Monday I took part in a Press Conference in Washington D.C. on the steps of the Supreme Court.  The conference was carried widely and ultimately made its way to YouTube and Facebook and was viewed by well over 20 million viewers.

I spoke at the conference on one topic and one topic alone: the Covid-19 pandemic as it related to children and the importance of getting our schools re-opened. The points that I made at the press conference were these: kids are not doing well under the current on-line, Zoom paradigm, they’re not getting the education we would like them to have and they’re missing out on socializing with their peers, which, of course, is a big part of the school experience.  I am not alone in this opinion.  I am supported in this view by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Center for Disease Control, many other national organizations and my local pediatric colleagues. As an advocate for children, I stand behind my comments.

After I finished my statements at the conference, I was followed by several speakers who spoke about treating Covid-19 patients with hydroxychloroquine.  Since we have had very few children in our office who have tested positive for the coronavirus (around 8-10), many of whom have been asymptomatic and none requiring hospitalization, I have not had any direct experience treating pediatric Covid-19 patients.  Thus, lacking any experience in Covid-19 treatment, it was not my place to speak about this issue at the conference.

What followed my statements were comments by some of the other speakers that I felt were divisive and that I want to clearly distance myself from.  Specifically, I am addressing the statements that facemasks are of “no value” in limiting viral spread and that hydroxychloroquine “cures” Covid-19 infection.  Both of these statements do not reflect scientific data and do not reflect my stand on these issues.

I hope this brings clarity to my views.  I am aware that my appearance at this press conference has caused controversy amongst many of our patients, and hope this letter brings perspective to my feelings about these issues.

If you have questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Robert C. Hamilton, M.D., F.A.A.P.
