Financial History: Book Recommendations

Since I began publicly nerding out about financial history, I've been asked for a list of recommended books by people looking to learn more. Well, after starting this website and newsletter, I figured it's the perfect time to compile that list!

I can assure you now, however, that I will forget to include an obvious choice until it's too late, so apologies in advance... BUT here are my recommended Financial History books. Whether you read them in their entirety, or just sections you find interesting, you will thoroughly enjoy all of these books.

Please note that this list is far from exhaustive, and I will update!

I cannot recommend this book enough. Dive into the history of technology investing, starting with Railroad Mania.
Niall Ferguson is another history legend, and this book is an excellent intro / overview of financial history.
As the name suggests, this book offers a broad history of investing, with some chapters drilling down into classic manias like the Mississippi & South Sea bubbles.
A book covering a wide range of financial history topics and periods, with incredible stories about subjects like the stock exchange in Ancient Rome.
This has to be the most recommended financial history book, and for good reason. Read this to understand that human nature never changes.
In financial history, Professor William Goetzmann is the GOAT. This book covers the history of finance and markets since Mesopotamia.
If you are particularly interested in learning more about U.S. financial history, then look no further. Scott Nation's book does an excellent job.
The history of finance is fascinating because of the characters involved. This covers many of the big names you already know, but many others that are equally interesting.
Happy Reading!
