WELL STRUCTURED AND UP TO DATE CURRICULUM IS A KEY FOR SOFTWARE ENGINEERING STUDIES

The fast pace, with which the ICT industry is growing, shapes the development of software systems into an increasingly complex and challenging endeavor. An inevitable consequence is that often the institutions, providing education in software engineering, cannot keep up with the industry and end up teaching outdated practices and technologies. The problem goes that far that sometimes students, who enter the industry, are forced to unlearn working methods acquired in formal education.

Therefore, the SoftAware project aims to develop a curriculum for a bachelor’s degree in software technologies that incorporates industry best practice and state of the art technology to equip software engineering graduates with skills needed by the industry.

For this purpose, Technical University of Sofia (TU Sofia, BG) has developed a conceptual model of the curriculum. While all project partners had a task to contact stakeholders at their national level and perform a desk research to contribute to the definition of the most applicable curriculum framework and learning outcomes. Therefore, TU Sofia have organised a round table discussion with five experts and Lithuanian partners (Kaunas University of Technology and Kaunas Science and Technology Park) have organised a round table discussion and conducted and in-depth interview with seventeen experts.
The performance of desk researches in Lithuania and Bulgaria went very successfully. The involved stakeholders – national experts appreciated the initiative and presented valuable remarks as well as hands-on recommendations. All experts unanimously agreed that a need of IT professionals is increasing and will continue increasing in the future. Therefore, qualified specialists in the labour market will be on a high demand. They also agreed that sustainable collaboration between universities and IT companies is an important factor for the development of a highly qualified workforce. To that end, business sector, IT companies, should be involved in the development and constant improvement of the study programme through a maintenance of a broader dialogue.

Experts also noticed that the developed programme provides a well-balanced set of subjects corresponding to the current technology trends and needs. However, experts emphasized an importance for students to get a hands-on experience. Therefore, they recommended to extend time for practice in the programme and include internship at IT companies.

To complete the desk research, Polytechnic of Leiria (PT project partner) will contribute to the task by the end of September. Consequently, partners from Cyprus and Netherlands will provide their own observations and opinion as matter experts.
SOFTAWARE ONLINE COURSES

The second project’s output will comprise three online courses. The developed courses will equip students with basic understanding of software products, design and development process, software project management and design complexities.
All project partners led by three higher education institutions in LT, BG and PT are joining their efforts in developing innovative, interactive, and engaging learning material. The development process turned out to be quite demanding and creative at the same time. The Covid-19 outbreak made a drastic impact on education system and its shift from  a face to face learning to a distance learning. Therefore, the SoftAware online courses became even more important then it was envisaged from the very beginning of project’s implementation. To that end, project partners were very motivated and worked hard even during the summertime and developed some interactive materials to be included in the SoftAware online courses.
We have introduced the series of backstage teaser videos of the SoftAware Online Courses recorded by KTU. As you will see, we give a priority to the interactive way of learning. We also try to help students receive knowledge in a fun and interesting way.

Our readers are kindly invited to check on one of the final videos of the SoftAware online courses prepared by KTU. Video is available here.
