Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, H.E. Mr. Sergey Petrovich, presents his credentials to ISA Secretary-General

On 17 August 2021, the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to ISA, H.E. Mr. Sergey Petrovich, presented his credentials to the Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, during a ceremony held in Kingston, Jamaica. Ambassador Petrovich is a career diplomat who joined the Russian diplomatic service in 1993.

ISA announces new MSR Information Webinar Series for Africa with first edition to be hosted on 16 September

Building on the activities of the Africa’s Deep Seabed Resources (ADSR) project and the identification of specific capacity-building and development needs by African country members of ISA, the ISA Secretariat is convening a series of webinars on marine scientific research (MSR) focusing on a wide range of topics, such as mineral resources assessments, environmental management and data management. The first webinar in the series will focus on Deep-sea Mineral Resources and Technologies and will take place on 16 September 2021. The main objective will be to present complementarity between exploration of deep-seabed mineral resources and marine scientific research undertaken in the Area, conceived as the foundation of sustainable development of deep-seabed mineral resources.

ISA to host a workshop on "Enhancing image-based biodiversity assessments to advance deep-sea taxonomy" on 12-14 October 2021

ISA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea (MOMAF) and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK), will convene an online workshop on Enhancing Image-based Biodiversity Assessments to Advance Deep-Sea Taxonomy  on 12-14 October 2021. The workshop aims to identify technical means and key elements for a standardized model necessary to facilitate effective sharing and use of image data within the context of ISA, with a view to enhancing deep-sea species identification and quantification, as well as increasing capacity and literacy in deep-sea taxonomy.

 Capacity development & training

IOCaribe and ISA successfully deliver joint regional co-design workshop on capacity development related to the deep sea

ISA and the Sub commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions of the International Oceanic Commission of UNESCO (IOCARIBE) successfully hosted the “Co-design workshop on Capacity Development: 1. The Deep Sea".

The online workshop was convened in the context of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and builds on ISA’s Action Plan in support of the Decade as well as on its programmatic approach to capacity development.

Application deadline extended until 8 October for 14 online training opportunities on exploration for polymetallic nodules and polymetallic sulphides with COMRA

The deadline to apply for 14 online training opportunities provided by China Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association (COMRA) for candidates from developing States Members of ISA has been extended to 8 October 2021 instead of 10 August.

Deadline for nominations extended for nine online training opportunities with the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India

The deadline for nominations for nine online training opportunities provided by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) of the Government of India for candidates from developing States Members of ISA has been extended to 11 October 2021 instead of 5 August.
