"STOP THE VOTE COUNT" Tweeted Donald Trump on election night, as there were still millions of votes to be counted. This is an outright assault on our already eroding democracy.
He has said that he will take this to the Supreme Court and we have seen how they have bitterly stacked that court against the people. John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Conney Barrett were all three on George Bush's legal team in 2000 when they stole the election from Al Gore based on Florida vote count. They are certainly experienced and prepared to do it again.
We can't let them steal the election!
In North Carolina, hundreds of thousands of votes remain to be counted. Many of those votes are in deep-blue counties, along with late-arriving absentee ballots that we anticipate will lean heavily towards our candidates. As long as they are postmarked by election day, the courts have ruled that absentee ballots will be counted if they arrive by November 12th.
That’s all good news for us. Once all the votes are counted, there is a slight chance that our candidates have a path to victory—not just for the presidency and the Senate, but for other crucial statewide races.
However, it does seem to appear that there are at least 6 seats in the State House and Senate that have shifted from Democrat to Republican, making the overall composition of the General Assembly more antagonistic to our workers program. Phil Berger, Speaker of the House, last night in a speech mentioned that the election was a mandate to privatize public schools (and potentially other public services) and to reopen public schools despite that massive spike in COVID-19 cases we are currently facing. These are dangerous announcements.
We know how to fight a backwards state legislature. We need to get in fighting shape. The best way to do that is to continue our deep workplace organizing and get in the streets.
