KERA in Dallas announced plans Tuesday to acquire the Denton Record-Chronicle, a long-running newspaper in Denton, Texas.
KERA is in the “final stages” of its due diligence work on the transaction, KERA CEO Nico Leone told Current. He expects the deal to close sometime in 2023. “We’ve agreed in principle that everything is lining up just right,” Denton Record-Chronicle Publisher Bill Patterson told Current. “I think both parties are really excited about the opportunity that we can help preserve local journalism in the North Texas area.” This is not in the “scope of what the Chicago Sun-Times and WBEZ/Chicago did,” Leone said, referring to Chicago Public Media’s acquisition of the newspaper earlier this year. “But it’s a great way for us to expand the breadth and depth of our services to communities with things that are really rooted in a specific community within our coverage area.”

Governmental Relations
FEDERAL
On Friday, the House passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to avoid a government shutdown and keep the government funded through December 16, 2022. The measure passed the Senate yesterday and is expected to be signed by the President -- averting a government shutdown.
With the new federal fiscal year (FY) 2023 beginning October 1, 2022, the CR keeps the government funded at last year’s levels until Congress can complete work on the FY 2023 appropriations bills after the midterm elections.
There are still many big decisions to be made on the FY 2023 funding bills, including the overall topline spending numbers. However, these negotiations and decisions are likely on hold until after the election.
America’s Public Television Stations (APTS) continue to work with key congressional offices to advocate increased funding levels that have already been approved in committee. This work includes outreach to stations represented by these offices at strategic times in the process.
Can't We All Just Get Along?
Berlin -- A cow herd in Germany has gained an unlikely following, after adopting a lone wild boar piglet. Farmer Friedrich Stapel told the dpa news agency that he spotted the piglet among the herd in the central German community of Brevoerde about three weeks ago. It had likely lost its group when they crossed a nearby river. Stapel said while he knows what extensive damage wild boars can cause, he can’t bring himself to chase the animal away, dpa reported Thursday. The local hunter has been told not to shoot the piglet — nicknamed Frieda — and in winter Stapel plans to put it in the shed with the mother cows. “To leave it alone now would be unfair,” he told dpa.
