ILRI 2018 annual report now available
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has published its annual report for 2018, and for the first time in its publication history, the report is primarily online. Going digital was done to save paper, match the best practices of other organizations within CGIAR and, generally speaking, jump into the 21st century. Read more
CGIAR Antimicrobial Resistance Hub launched
In February, a new CGIAR Antimicrobial Resistance Hub was launched at ILRI to help countries reduce and refine their antimicrobial use in crop, livestock and fish farming to help stem the rise of drug resistance in disease-causing organisms and thus protect public health. Vietnam is one of the focus countries that this platform targets. Read more
CGIAR to support Vietnam's national program for rural development under new agreement
In March, the National Target Program on New Rural Development in Vietnam and the nine CGIAR centres operating in the country signed a memorandum of understanding. The parties agreed to work together to promote technical and scientific cooperation on agricultural technology research and development to improve rural livelihoods in Vietnam. Read more
Staff planning retreat: finalizing ILRI East and Southeast Asia regional strategic plan
Staff of ILRI East and Southeast Asia held a two-day retreat (1-2 April) in Da Nang City, Vietnam to reflect on their achievements and challenges over the past few years. They examined how they work with colleagues and partners, within and outside ILRI and explored ways of translating regional research priorities into impactful interventions. Staff were also involved in a series of brainstorming and discussion sessions to finalize the regional strategic plan for 2018-2022. The strategy will be completed in the next couple of months and executed from the end 2019.
CGIAR Research Program on Livestock sets plan for Vietnam
From 8–10 April, researchers from the CGIAR Research Program on Livestock Agri-food System gathered in Hanoi to discuss the framework, work packages and action plans for the next 2.5 years for Vietnam. The country is one of the program’s four focus countries and Son La Province in the northwest was identified as a critical area for interventions to improve the livelihoods and nutrition for ethnic minorities. In Vietnam, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and ILRI coordinate this program. Read more
ILRI seeks to strengthen cooperation with Laos partners in livestock development
From 25-28 April, Hung Nguyen, ILRI’s regional representative for East and Southeast Asia and Michael Victor, ILRI’s Head of Communication and Knowledge Management, paid a visit to Laos and met different partners to strengthen existing engagements and explore new opportunities to support livestock development in the country. They attended the 20th anniversary of the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI), Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) in Vientiane, Laos. They met Somphanh Chanphengxay, director general of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, MAF and Bounthong Buoahom, director general of NAFRI, to discuss the potential to strengthen the partnership between ILRI and Laos partners and expand ILRI’s research to support the country’s livestock sector. Later, Nguyen and Victor met Dulce Simmanivong, regional manager of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), and CGIAR sister organizations the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and CIAT who are already working in Laos to discuss how CGIAR as a whole can better collaborate with Laos partners to support the country’s agricultural development.

The 2018 annual report of the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) was launched in June 2019. The report highlights the program's accomplishments and activities during the second year of its second phase. Read more
Celebrating the inaugural World Food Safety Day: A focus on food safety research at ILRI
The ILRI Vietnam joined the rest of the world in celebrating the first-ever World Food Safety Day on 7 June 2019 following the adoption, in December 2018, of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate the benefits of safe food and inspire actions towards preventing and managing food-borne diseases. Millions of small pig farmers in Asia threatened by African swine fever outbreak
Millions of small-scale pig farmers across Asia risk falling into poverty due to the rapid spread of African swine fever. In Vietnam, almost 10 million people depend on pig farming. Read more
Key posters on African swine fever now available in Vietnamese
A new set of posters on African swine fever developed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OiE) is now available in Vietnamese. The four posters, which can be downloaded and printed, describe African swine fever and the biosecurity measures for preventing this incurable disease of pigs, which is spreading quickly in Vietnam. Symposium offers opportunities to share lessons on pork production and safety
Bringing together nearly 100 researchers from 16 countries, ILRI and the University of Queensland co-convened a regional symposium in March in Hanoi. Participants shared experiences and exchanged views on how to promote smallholder pig production in Asia and the Pacific in a sustainable way. Read more
ILRI research on food safety and One Health featured at the third Global ODA Forum for Sustainable Agricultural Development
Findings from food safety, zoonoses and One Health research by scientists from ILRI and partners were presented at the Third Global ODA Forum for Sustainable Agricultural Development held 13-15 May 2019 in Seoul, South Korea. Read more
Agriculture, Nutrition and Health Academy Week 2019
ILRI scientists participated extensively in the third Annual Agriculture, Nutrition and Health (ANH) Academy Week that was held in Hyderabad, India from 24-28 June. The ANH Academy Week program featured Learning Labs (training workshops) offered by ANH Academy partners, a scientific research conference with invited papers, posters and panel sessions, and many opportunities for networking with other researchers and research users. Capacity development in the Metropolitan Mosquitoes project
The ‘Metropolitan mosquitoes: understanding urban livestock keeping and vector-borne disease in growing tropical cities’ or Metropolitan Mosquitoes project hosted a master’s student, Lorraine Chapot, from the Royal Veterinary College and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for one month (May-June). She studied the possible interventions to control and prevent the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases to humans.
Using system effects modelling to identify challenges, impacts and strategies for improving food safety in Cambodia and Vietnam
Hosted by ILRI and the University of New South Wales, Canberra at the ILRI Hanoi office in May 2019, a training introduced the system effects methodology to 16 researchers from Cambodia’s Ministry of Health and Centre for Livestock and Agriculture Development; and Vietnam’s National University of Veterinary Research and the Hanoi University of Public Health to help them identify the challenges, impacts and strategies for influencing policy on issues related to food-borne illnesses and antimicrobial resistance in the two countries. Volunteering with the SafePORK project
Marisa Mitchell, a volunteer from the Australian International Volunteers (AVI) completed her work of giving support to the ‘market-based approaches to improving the safety of pork in Vietnam’ project, an ACIAR-supported project focusing on market-based solutions to improve food safety along the pork-value-chain in Vietnam known as SafePORK. Student exchange with SafePORK project
With the aim of developing capacity on livestock and pig health research and modelling of disease spread and control, a one-month visit at the University of Sydney was arranged for two ILRI Vietnam research partners. Nguyen Thanh Luong, from the Hanoi University of Public Health and Ninh Thi Huyen from the National Institute of Animal Science are key implementing partners of the SafePORK project.
ILRI supports South-South partnership to improve food safety in Asia
ILRI scientists in East and Southeast Asia are scaling up lessons of food safety research and capacity development originally developed in Vietnam to neighbouring countries. So far, they have trained more than 100 stakeholders in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Thailand on different frameworks for food safety risk assessment. Read more

- Consultancy on a socio-economic study on African swine fever disease impacts in Vietnam that was contracted with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
- Consultancy on a study to better understand the risks to health and related economic costs, from the interface among humans, livestock, and the environment and humans' behaviour and agriculture practices, and to propose interventions that was contracted with the One Health Partnership, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (MARD).
