Our first source of inspiration is the name itself.
To bemuse = to puzzle, to bewilder, to make confused
Bemused now means feeling confused and bewildered. But the word was first used to describe the state of poets, irrecoverably bemused by beer. They would find inspiration in the fumes of alcohol as they would in the fumes of the incense in Greek temples while invoking the Muses.
Now, we won’t deny it, a few of these newsletters might be written with a glass or two, but bemused will be mainly about finding our own muses and new sources of inspiration, to help us disentangle and slow down the bemusing world we’ve ended up living in this year.
We also promise to not talk about words’ etymologies ever again.
If nothing else, we hope this will be an easy weekly guide you can skim through, or go looking back for when you don’t know what to listen to on the tube.
