Highlights from the Arab States, Europe and the CIS...

South-South cooperation promotes closer collaboration among countries, helping them to achieve their shared and individual development goals. The countries in both the Arab States and the Europe and the CIS regions are taking steps towards establishing a solid approach that will enable them to receive maximum benefits from South-South cooperation.

The GSSD Expo this year featured thousands of documented best practices from Member States, the United Nations system, private-sector enterprises and civil society organizations. It provided a powerful platform for all development actors and stakeholders to showcase Southern development solutions, celebrate South-South and triangular cooperation successes, share knowledge and lessons learned, explore new avenues for collaboration, and initiate new partnership efforts. The first place winner of the Youth4South Solutions Awareness Contest has successfully transferred their expertise in youth development from the Philippines to Indonesia.  Find out more.

The Fifth Regional Networking Forum for Arab States, Europe and the CIS, hosted at the Global South-South Development Expo 2018, explored the theme "South-South Cooperation in the green economy for agricultural development and enhanced food security". Read more.

The Silk Road Mayors' Meeting on South-South Cooperation on Smart Green Cities and Tourism explored the possibilities of South-South cooperation for city members of the Maritime-Continental Silk Road Cities Alliance (MCSR CA), that are part of the Belt and Road Initiative and beyond. Find out more.

In honour of the Year of Zayed, the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment organized an event to raise awareness of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayhan's achievements and contributions to the environment and sustainable development.  Find out more.

In October, we launched a new vibrant and dynamic web page (sstc-adfs.southsouthworld.orgcovering all the results achieved under the South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Agricultural Development and Enhanced Food Security (SSTC-ADFS) partnership initiative. Read more.

At the side-event of the World Green Economy Summit 2018, another High-level Ministerial Meeting took place on advancing the new initiative titled South-South and Triangular cooperation in the Green Economy for Agricultural Development and Food Security. Read more.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt hosted a round of preparatory consultations ahead of the second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation (BAPA+40 Conference) that focused on the role of South-South cooperation in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Read more.

10 December, Hong Kong, China – The Finance Centre for South-South Cooperation’s (FCSSC) annual South-South Financial Forum was convened in partnership with the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC). Find out more.

8 December 2018, KatowicePoland — At the Japanese Pavilion, UNOSSC, in partnership with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), hosted a side event on South-South and triangular cooperation towards achieving the climate goals and sustainable development solutions during the  twenty-fourth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 24) in Katowice, Poland at the Japanese Pavilion. Read more.

30 November 2018, New York – A Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation was signed between UNOSSC and the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) at a side event during the Global South-South Development Expo 2018. Learn more.

26 - 27 November 2018, Gebze-Kocaeli, Turkey The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBITAK) National Metrology Institute (TUBITAK UME) in Turkey successfully organized the workshop "Metrology for the Least Developed Countries". Read more.
21 - 25 October 2018, Tunis, Tunisia – The World Food Programme annual Global Child Nutrition Forum, held in Tunis in 2018, called for the ownership by African countries of their school feeding programmes. Read more.

11 - 12 September 2018, Paris, France – UNESCO organized a thematic forum titled "The Role of Private-sector Partnerships, South-South and Triangular Cooperation and Domestic Finance in Achieving Sustainable Development”. Learn more.

10 September 2018, Rome, Italy – The three Rome-based United Nation agencies gathered at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to celebrate the 2018 United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation (SSC).  Find out more.

United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation:
The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) promotes, coordinates and supports South-South and triangular cooperation on a global and United Nations system-wide basis. Formerly known as the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, hosted by UNDP, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1974. It receives policy directives and guidance from the General Assembly High-level Committee (HLC) on South-South Cooperation, which is a committee of the whole and a subsidiary body of the General Assembly that reviews worldwide progress in South-South cooperation.
