What's New In Our Polk County Democratic Clubs and Caucuses 
The newly elected president of the Polk County Democratic Black Caucus, Retired Captain (PCSO) James E. Hogan, was guest speaker during the May meeting of Polk County Democrats.
Having lived in Polk County his entire life, Captain Hogan has a BA in Organizational Management from Warner University in Lake Wales and retired from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office after 31 years of service. 
He currently serves on multiple community boards including (but not limited to) being Vice-President of Polk County Sheriff’s Charities; Commissioner on the Winter Haven Housing Authority; and, newly appointed Trustee of the Winter Haven Police Department’s Pension Committee.
He is married with five children and five grandchildren.
The Solivita Democratic Club met in person for the first time in more than a year on May 12, 2021,
in the Solivita Starlite Ballroom, Poinciana, Florida.

Pride Month Activities
In advance of LGBT Month in June, the 6th annual Tampa Pride Diversity Parade will be held this weekend in historic Ybor City. For more information or to volunteer, click tampapride.org.

It is understood Polk Pride 2021 events are being planned for June 12-19. Details will be provided as more information is made available.
Lakeland considers police body cameras

Lakeland city commissioners agreed on Friday to continue discussing body cameras for police after hearing two other Florida cities say the cameras have become essential policing tools that once-skeptical officers now embrace. For more, click here.
Winter Haven seeks residents to serve on a new police advisory board 

The newly approved Winter Haven Public Safety Community Advisory Committee will consist of  nine community members and two alternates. The committee will have the power to look into closed investigations and ask questions about decisions that were made. Additionally, the committee can look into issues such as officer training or controversial proposals, such as mandating officers wear body cameras. Applications to join the committee closes May 31. Former liberal Democrat speaker dies

Former Florida House Speaker and Education Commissioner Ralph Turlington, who pushed through the state lottery, corporate income tax and open records law, has died at 100, his family said. Read more here.
