CRIMINAL JUSTICE WEEK
This week, Kimberly and Team BIZON will be focusing on Criminal Justice Reform.
"Rehabilitation means being a part of society again."- Kimberly
The phrase "defund the police" has been going around lately, especially after the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. Protests spawned across the nation to combat police brutality and other systemic racism that people of color experience in this country every day. I stood with my community at our local protests and I always will. However, the phrase "defund the police" is a misnomer that can create panic among conservatives and act as a road block to real change. I support a thorough review of community budget allocations and structuring, from police and first responders, to other public services, so that community budgets can be properly funded and so local citizens have a say in how their communities are kept safe. I support police and first responders, but I am concerned that other services in our local communities have been terminated, and the police and first responders have picked up the slack. Social services need attention and funding to address economic, mental health, and other daily life problems, instead of funding prisons and jails, especially for our children and teens.
Private prison systems are not the money savers they were sold on, nor do they provide better security, housing, health, and safety. This needs to be addressed, and we need to ensure that incarcerated citizens participate in rehabilitation programs, job training, and receive proper healthcare and support so when they complete their sentences, they are ready to be contributing members of society and are prepared to live productive, full lives, and not be labeled as criminals with no job prospects.
Lastly, it is time to legalize marijuana in this country. Michigan has been on the front line of this journey and I couldn't be prouder of our progress. However, marijuana needs to be decriminalized and legalized federally so that state systems can be allocated the resources they need to develop this growing economic sector. Too many people are in jail for small marijuana related offenses and they need to be released and their records expunged. These people deserve a second chance.
Kimberly has started her Community Outreach, here is where she has been since winning the Primary.
