In Case You Missed It . . .
Take Note: A Conversation with Joe Galloway, a "Soldier's Reporter and a Soldier's Friend.”
General Norman Schwarzkopf called him “the finest combat correspondent of our generation---a soldier’s reporter and a soldier’s friend.” In his 50-years in journalism, Joe Galloway was assigned to cover Japan, India, and the former USSR, among other places, reporting from numerous combat operations. In 1998, he received a Bronze Star Medal with Valor for rescuing wounded soldiers while under fire; the only medal of valor the U.S. Army awarded to a civilian for actions during the Vietnam War. (This interview originally aired on Dec. 13, 2013. WPSU rebroadcast it because of Joseph Galloway's recent death on Aug. 18, 2021 at the age of 79.)Listen here.

New Initiative Brings Together Pubmedia Leaders To Focus On DEI Efforts
Public media leaders seeking to advance diversity initiatives within their organizations can now find inspiration in a new program launched by Furman University and South Carolina ETV. From May 24 to July 28, 31 pubmedia leaders from across the country participated virtually in the debut of the Public Media Diversity Leaders Initiative, offered by SCETV and Furman University’s Riley Institute. A second cohort of leaders will take part in the program Sept. 9 to Dec. 9. Led by Juan Johnson, a facilitator and senior fellow with the Riley Institute, the PMDLI comprises four six-hour days of sessions and a final three-hour meeting. It uses audiovisual tools and scenario analysis exercises combined with small-group breakouts.
Upcoming ‘Nova’ Doc Builds On A Decade Of Marijuana Research
Nova has been a fixture on public television for nearly a half-century but, as recently as 10 years ago, it could not have presented "The Cannabis Question,” an episode that premieres Sept. 29. “We definitely know a lot more now than we did 10 years ago in a number of ways,” Dr. Yasmin Hurd, a neuroscientist and addiction expert, told TV critics Thursday on the third and final day of the PBS portion of the annual summer Television Critics Association press tour. The Nova episode looks at research related to marijuana as well as marijuana’s changing status in the legal system. The impact of cannabis on the brain had not been studied to such an extent a decade ago, Hurd said.
Governmental Relations
On Tuesday, August 24th, the House of Representatives approved the Senate’s budget resolution. This starts the budget reconciliation process, which could offer an opportunity to incorporate CPB’s $300 million infrastructure request into upcoming legislation. Budget reconciliation is a procedural tool that allows the majority party, in this case the Democratic Party, to advance policy priorities without requiring minority support. Shortly, the House and Senate Committees will begin drafting budgetary legislation for programs under their jurisdiction. It’s a complex process with limitations and requires full Democratic support, which isn’t guaranteed.
Remember this is in addition to the following requests that are pending approval in the Appropriations Bill:
• $565 million for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in FY 2024 representing a $90 million increase.
• $20 million for Interconnection — level funding that matches our request.
• $31.78 million for Ready To Learn — a $2.28 million increase.
WPSU receives federal funding through CPB. We will keep you updated on funding news as the resolution and Appropriations Bill moves forward.

MARSHFIELD, Wis. — Spotted in a car at a McDonald’s drive-through in Wisconsin: A cow — all of it. Jessica Nelson of Mosinee pulled into the drive-through at a McDonald’s in Marshfield and said she looked up to see a cow in the backseat of a Buick sedan three cars ahead of her. “I thought it was fake at first. Who puts a cow in a Buick?” she told The Associated Press on Friday. “Then its whole head moved.” She quickly picked up her phone and shot video of the bovine. “I just took the video of it because I was blown away there was a cow in the back of a Buick,” she said. She posted the video on her Facebook page with the caption “A WHOLE FREAKING COW!!! Tell me you live in Wisconsin without telling me you live in Wisconsin.” She also pasted a message on the video itself that read “That’s a whole (expletive) cow in the back of that car!” See the video.
