Passing of Former ISA Secretary-General Nii Odunton

Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge expresses his sadness on the passing of former ISA Secretary-General, Mr. Nii Allotey Odunton. "It is with great sorrow that I learned of the passing of my predecessor as Secretary-General, Nii Allotey Odunton on 13 February 2022 at his home in Ghana," he said.
Nii Allotey Odunton served as Secretary-General of ISA for two consecutive terms starting in 2009 and ending in 2016.
Books of condolences are open for signature at the Authority’s headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica, (14-20 Port Royal Street) as well as the office of the Authority in New York (1 United Nations Plaza, Room 1140) until 4 March 2022, between 12:00 and 16:00.

ISA World Oceans Day

ISA is hosting two art competitions to celebrate the deep sea, marine scientific research and exploration.
The competitions on the theme "deep-sea exploration” are open until 16 May 2022 and the winners will be announced on World Oceans Day, on 8 June 2022, during a special event held in Kingston, Jamaica.

On 28 February 2022, Dr. Raijeli L. Taga (Fiji), facilitator of the informal working group on the protection and preservation of the marine environment established by the ISA Council, hosted a webinar to present her suggested revised text for Parts IV and VI and Annexes IV, VII and VIII of the draft regulations on exploitation of mineral resources in the Area (ISBA/27/C/IWG/ENV/CRP.1). Following the presentation, members and observers of ISA were given the opportunity to share their views on the proposed text.

ISA successfully hosts virtual webinar on equitable sharing of financial and other economic benefits from deep-seabed mining
On 22 February 2022, ISA successfully hosted a virtual webinar on equitable sharing of financial and other economic benefits from deep-seabed mining. The webinar, which was attended by over 180 participants from 60 different countries, provided an opportunity to dive into the main elements of a recent report on equitable benefit sharing and explore some of the key concepts currently under discussion and development. ISA Secretary-General delivers statement at One Ocean Summit
At the invitation of the Government of France, the Secretary-General of ISA, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, delivered a statement on 10 February 2022 at the opening of the One Ocean Summit. In his contribution, Mr. Lodge recalled the unique role and mandate assigned to ISA by UNCLOS as trustee of the deep sea and the successful contribution it has made to prevent unrestrained exploitation of the deep-seabed whilst ensuring that data and information collected during exploration effectively supports the expansion of our collective understanding and knowledge of the ocean at large. "We have also seen the progressive development of a sophisticated and balanced legal regime, open to equal participation by developed and developing States, anchored in the precautionary approach, transparency, and equity, and fully aligned with the Agenda 2030." he said.

ISA Council approves four additional APEIs
In December 2021, the ISA Council made progress in the implementation of the environmental management plan for the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) and approved the designation of four additional areas of particular environmental interest (APEIs) to enhance the effectiveness of the existing network of APEIs. This brings the total number of APEIs in the CCZ to 13 and the total area entirely protected from mining from 1.4 to 1.97 million km2 (16.6% of the CCZ).

First session of the 2022 Deep-DiplomaSea webinar series for diplomats and UN senior representatives
The first session of ISA's 2022 Deep-DiplomaSea webinar series was held on 17 February 2022 with the aim to raise awareness of ISA's role, mandate and work among personnel of permanent missions to ISA and the United Nations. More than 70 participants from 64 different countries registered for the event.
The second session in the series will be held in May 2022.

Applications open until 4 April for one three-month virtual internship with Ocean Mineral Singapore Pte. Ltd.
ISA is calling for candidates with a master’s degree in computer science or electrical engineering, or at least a upper second class honors degree or equivalent in a similar discipline for a virtual internship with OMS. The selected intern will work with NUS Acoustic Research Laboratory to improve existing machine learning based modelling of the spatial distribution of nodule parameters by tapping into more powerful neural network architectures and modelling techniques.

Applications open until 18 April for four training opportunities with the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization
ISA is calling for candidates with a Bachelor or Engineering degree in natural sciences, applied sciences, technology or engineering with at least one year of experience in the field of specialization. Candidates will receive a comprehensive six (6) weeks multidisciplinary training in the field of polymetallic nodules project management (including legal framework, exploration activities, environmental research, economic cycle and metallurgical processing).

ISA Legal and Technical Commission announces the selection of candidates to benefit from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation training opportunities
On 17 February 2022, the Legal and Technical Commission of ISA confirmed the selection of seven candidates for training opportunities provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contracts for polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts with ISA.

Commitment #1
Advance women’s empowerment and leadership in marine scientific research and particularly in deep-sea research with a focus on designing and implementing tailored activities and programmes aimed at addressing the specific challenges faced by women scientists from developing States including least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island States.
Commitment #2
Ensure that the ISA Secretariat maintains gender parity including at the most senior levels (P5 and above) and engage all efforts to promote gender equality and leadership of women in the development and implementation of international law of the sea.

ISA to host women in the law of the sea conference in June 2022
As part of ISA's celebrations of UNCLOS 40, ISA will be organizing a 3-day conference on Women in the Law of the Sea in June 2022. The conference will feature women from developing States who have made an impact in the scientific community. The official date will be announced at a later date.
