IN MEMORIUM: FRED KOSSAM
We were saddened to receive news of the sudden passing of our friend and colleague Fred Kossam. A climate change negotiator for Malawi, Fred was a great champion for climate change adaptation and a founding member of the NAP Global Network’s Steering Committee. Read our full statement here.
ADAPTATION FUTURES 2018
From June 18–21, Adaptation Futures 2018 will convene over 1,000 scientists, practitioners, business leaders and policy-makers from around the world in Cape Town, South Africa, to discuss climate change adaptation. Find staff from the Network Secretariat at these sessions or visit our booth at the conference venue.
ADAPTATION FINANCE IN CAMBODIA
In our new sNAPshot brief, read how the Government of Cambodia has funded adaptation through their national budget. This is the third country brief in our series on domestic public finance, following country briefs on Albania and Kenya.
ASSESSING PROGRESS ON NAP PROCESSES
The UNFCCC secretariat has released a synthesis report that assesses progress in the process to formulate and implement NAPs. The report finds that “many developing countries have launched the process to formulate and implement NAP” but that “none of the countries that have completed the formulation of their NAPs have yet implemented the prioritized policies, projects or programmes identified therein.”
READER NETWORK REPORTS ONLINE
There’s a new way to read our publications online. We have a new digital reader tool to make reading publications online easier, available for three publications so far:
FROM OUR BLOG
“The first time I was exposed to the gender dimensions of climate change adaptation was almost 15 years ago in the southwestern region of Bangladesh.” Angie Dazé reflects on her personal learning journey on gender and climate change adaptation.
Are cities “the new protagonists of the NAP process”? Arianna Flores Corral, Global Development Network, spoke with officials from Mozambique and Egypt on the sidelines of NAP Expo 2018 about cities’ role in NAP processes.
What are 10 best-bet innovations for agriculture in National Adaptation Plans? Read how adaptation can support food security in this blog from Fabian Verhage from the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS).
NEW BRIEFS ON NAP PROCESSES
The joint FAO-UNDP Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans Programme (NAP-Ag) released five new reports last month that highlight innovative and evidence-based approaches for climate change policy-making. According to the reports, entry points on mainstreaming gender within NAPs, institutional capacity assessments, project appraisal methods that allow policy-makers to prioritize adaptation options, and the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of these policies are all crucial for effective adaptation in agriculture.
The UNDP NAP Global Support Programme is also developing a series of briefs reviewing lessons learned in the process to formulate and implement NAPs in developing countries. These include regional briefings as well as country briefs on Armenia, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Haiti, Moldova, Morocco, Liberia, Niger (French and English), Papua New Guinea and Uruguay.
