The new TRANSGANG Newsletter.

We started a new year and a new phase of the TRANSGANG project. It will be a year focused on the field work, accompanied by a series of tasks  and events that we would like to share with you. With this objective in mind, we present you in a new format of the TRANSGANG Newsletter, of free subscription.

There is still much to do, so your comments are very welcome.

Happy new year of research!

Greetings on Epiphanies Day
I am writing this on Epiphanies Day, which for one of the groups we investigate - the Latin Kings & Queens - is a special day. I want to express my best wishes for the new year and share with you some news about the project.

Ethnographic visits
In 2020 we entered the equator of the research process, whose success depends on the fieldwork, which for the majority began recently. The ethnographic visits to Medellin, Santiago de Cuba, Tunisia, Rabat and Algiers, as well as the ones in Barcelona, Madrid and Milan, which in the coming months will be completed by visits to San Salvador, Chicago and Marseille, predict good opportunities for research.
TRANSGANG WORKING PAPERS
The first five issues of the TRANSGANG Working Papers are already available in the UPF repository, with the corresponding DOI. We invite you to read and spread them here.
TRANSGANG documentary
The TRANSGANG project will commission the realization of two documentary films and audiovisual content based on the research of the project for the years 2020 and 2021. The tender for the contest has been published and the deadline closed on January 30. You will find the documentation here.
GangPedia Launch
The GangPedia, a collaborative encyclopedia on youth street gangs, has been launched. Together we have to construct the content. In the coming months we will explain how to contribute to it. At the moment the first draft is already open. You can find it here.

Publications EL REY and THE GANG
In the coming months two books will be published that constitute the first paper publications of the project. These are THE KING. Diary of a Latin King, by Carles Feixa and César Andrade, and the translation of THE GANG. A study on 1313 gangs in Chicago, by Frederic Thrasher, with translation by María Oliver and Carles Feixa. These books inaugurate the TRANSGANG series of the NED publishing house, in which we hope to also publish the overall results of the project and by region. The information will soon be available on the website of the publisher here.

COMING CONFERENCES

During the next year some of us will have the opportunity to meet in two conferences: in June in Rabat with researchers from North Africa (ISA International Conference 2020 in Ifrane, “Africa and the Middle East and North Africa: Understanding Paradoxical Outcomes of Contemporary Transformations”); and in July in Porto Alegre with Latin American researchers (ISA World Forum of Sociology, July 14-18). We announce that in June 2021 the XXI EUROGANG Workshop will be held in Barcelona. And at the end of 2022 in Barcelona, Rabat or Medellín the final TRANSGANG meeting.
