Highlights from the Arab States, Europe and the CIS...

South-South cooperation promotes closer collaboration among countries, helping them to achieve their shared and individual development goals. The countries in both the Arab States and the Europe and the CIS regions are taking steps towards establishing a solid approach that will enable them to receive maximum benefits from South-South cooperation.

Find Out What Is Happening in the Regions

The Second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 20-22 March 2019. The General Assembly, recognizing the need to strengthen and further invigorate South-South cooperation, decided to convene a high-level United Nations conference on South-South cooperation on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among developing countries (TCDC). During the BAPA+40 Side Event on Private Sector Engagement in South-South and Triangular Cooperation, panelists discussed a variety of good practices, shared solutions, and elaborated on strategic approaches to promote and scale up the private sector engagement in South-South cooperation. Ethiopia teamed up with Morocco to boost agriculture production with the creation of Pan-African Fertilizers. The Moroccan government has approved the creation of Pan-African Fertilizers. The Moroccan OCP company’s subsidiary in Ethiopia, is expected to boost the East African country’s agricultural productivity. Read more.

The Livestock Management publication identifies and presents an analysis of existing sustainable policies and practices in livestock management that currently contribute or could potentially contribute to the enhanced resilience of smallholder farmer communities in the countries participating in the SSTC-ADFS partnership initiative. This year Sultan Qaboos University and FAO are working together to boost agriculture and fisheries sector capacities with South-South Cooperation and other forms of collaboration to support smallholders at national and regional levels in Oman. Find out more.

Almaty-based Neupusti.net online work database for youth recently launched the Silk Way Start-ups competition for Uzbek youth as part of the South-South Youth Leadership Initiative in advancing Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. Find out more.

Development Solutions

In this section, the Division for Arab States, Europe and the CIS presents an overview of some of the newest development solutions placed on the southsouthworld.org mapping portal, which was developed with the support of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS). This mapping tool is intended to provide "one-stop-shop" access to practical, easy-to-use expertise in the broad range of South-South cooperation mechanisms and solutions in the two regions.

SolarTurtle - Renewable Enterprise Development Across Africa

From their flagship solar containers that fold-away by the press of a button (like a turtle into its shell) to lightweight portable kiosks, that fold-away and store in-doors for safety, these micro-franchises allow community members to become entrepreneurs and address energy poverty at the source of the problem.

Local Level Risk Management Modality (LLRM)

LLRM module is a common format used in Armenia approved by DRR National Platform (DRR NP) and applied by all organizations involved in local level risk identification and reduction processes as a standard module and more than 200 communities have been assessed.

Sustainable energy solutions and innovative business models in rural Tajikistan
The project aims to contribute to the elimination of rural poverty and women empowerment through sustainable energy solutions.

22 March 2019, Buenos Aires, Argentina – Participants adopted the Buenos Aires Outcome Document of BAPA+40 and agreed that enhanced collaboration is crucial to address the changing geopolitical landscape and resource constraints. Read more.

United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation:
The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) promotes, coordinates and supports South-South and triangular cooperation on a global and United Nations system-wide basis. Formerly known as the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, hosted by UNDP, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1974. It receives policy directives and guidance from the General Assembly High-level Committee (HLC) on South-South Cooperation, which is a committee of the whole and a subsidiary body of the General Assembly that reviews worldwide progress in South-South cooperation.
