Women in the Law of the Sea
Conference 2022


ISA is pleased to invite expression of interest to participate in the Conference on Women in the Law of the Sea being organized by the Secretariat in March-June 2022 (dates to be confirmed) as part of a series of events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the adoption of UNCLOS. The conference will aim at demonstrating the important contribution of women to the development and implementation of the law of the sea and the participation of women in the institutions created by UNCLOS and related regional and sub-regional organizations. It will also discuss pathways to enhance the potential for women to further contribute to the law of the sea in the future.
ISA is inviting interested speakers to submit a resume and a short abstract (max 500 words) under one of the sessions listed in the call by 11 February 2022. Speakers from developing States and especially from the the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States are particularly encouraged to participate.

 Governance

ISA Secretary-General and IMO Secretary-General meet to discuss ongoing and future cooperation

In the context of a cooperation agreement signed in 2016, the Secretary-General of ISA, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, and the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), H.E. Mr. Kitack Lim, met on 18 October to discuss ongoing and future cooperation between the two organizations. The discussions included matters related to biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction within the context of UN-Oceans, the contribution of ISA experts to the Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP) and progress in the development of the regulatory framework for activities in the Area.

ISA Secretary-General opens NCS Exploration Deep Sea Minerals Conference in Bergen, Norway

The Secretary-General of ISA, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, delivered opening remarks at the NCS Exploration Deep Sea Minerals Conference on 19 October. "Whilst the conference is designed to address these issues primarily from a Norwegian perspective, the ocean is our shared resource and therefore the discussion is relevant to all of us as we continue to build the critical knowledge base to enable us to make the best possible decisions," he said. As he described the regulatory framework under development by ISA for the international seabed area, the Secretary-General highlighted that "[n]o State or entity has chosen to operate outside the global regime applied through ISA, which is testament to the fact that the regime is accepted by most of the international community."

Indicative programme of work and information notes for in-person meetings of the 26th session of ISA Council and Assembly released

On 1 and 14 October the ISA Secretariat shared with all ISA Members and Observers the indicative programme of work and the information note on matters for consideration by the ISA Council and the indicative programme of work and the information note on matters for consideration by the ISA Assembly for the in-person meetings of the 26th session scheduled to take place between 6 and10 December 2021 and between 13 and 15 December 2021, respectively.

ISA successfully concludes virtual workshop on the utilization of images for biodiversity assessment

On 14 October, ISA successfully concluded a three-day online workshop on Enhancing Image-based Biodiversity Assessments to Advance Deep-Sea Taxonomy. The workshop, which was organized with the support of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, involved over 120 participants from 41 countries.

ISA-Indonesia national capacity-building workshop increases understanding of environmental components of the legal framework governing activities carried out in the Area

On 14 October, ISA and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia successfully held a virtual national capacity-building workshop to review the environmental components of the legal framework governing activities carried out in the Area. The initiative to assist Indonesia as the country develops its national legislation for deep-seabed activities in the Area contributes to fulfilling ISA’s Strategic Plan and High-Level Action Plan for 2019-2023, in particular Strategic Directions 5 “Build capacity for developing State” and 6 “Ensure fully integrated participation by developing States”.

Applications now open for an ISA-Ifremer postdoctoral fellowship in deep-sea taxonomy

Applications are now open for a deep-sea taxonomy postdoctoral fellowship with Ifremer for candidates from developing States Members of ISA. The fellowship introduces candidates to developing and testing new methods and technologies for deep-sea species identification. This 18-month fellowship is expected to begin in February 2022. Applications by qualified candidates should be received no later than 30 November 2022.

Meet ISA trainees

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND LEADERSHIP IN DEEP-SEA RESEARCH

ISA cooperates with MABIK in the implementation of the Global Women’s Leadership Training Programme in Marine Bio-Resources Information System 

As part of its “Women in Deep-Sea Research” project designed to advance women’s empowerment and leadership in marine scientific research, particularly those from LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS, ISA is cooperating with MABIK in the implementation of the Global Women's Leadership Training Programme. A workshop took place between 25 and 29 October 2021 with the objective to design an action plan for Fiji to mainstream gender equality in fields such as taxonomy, ecology, informatics and repository management and support future Fijian women leaders in marine bio resources information systems.
