Help Establish a Pollinator
License Plate Program in California

"Three-fourths of the world's flowering plants and about 35 percent of the world's food crops depend on animal pollinators to reproduce. That's one out of every three bites of food you eat. More than 3,500 species of native bees help increase crop yields." USDA.....

A passion project for CCGC Board President Jay Klopfpenstein is the California license plate program for pollinators. This initiative would direct funds earned by the program for monarchs, bees and other pollinators needed for healthy and biodiverse ecosystems in our communities.

Jay Promotes Pollinators Every Chance He Gets
and Everywhere He Goes

As a dedicated Pollinator Champion, Jay works relentlessly to gain public and state officials support to establish the butterfly as an optional state license plate logo.

If you'd like to become a "champion" too, contact Jay Klopfenstein @ jayklopfenstein@gmail.com for more information.

Beautiful, Bountiful Garden Beds

Pine Ave Community Garden

Adding pollinator-friendly flowers to your vegetable patch will help increase pollination of your vegetables for a more prolific crop. Larger groupings of similar flowers make them easy to find.

As always, use non-toxic forms of pest control. Even organic pesticides may kill beneficial insects like bees and butterflies.

Kids Craft - Make DIY Seed Bombs -

Supplies:
1 part mixed flower seeds native to your area (1 packet can make several seed bombs)
4 parts natural clay
1 part seed-starting mix or compost

Instructions:
Roll out clay and flatten
Combine seed-starting mix or compost with the seeds and gently knead into the clay
Roll clay into a 1" diameter tube
Cut or pinch off 1" section and roll into balls
Place on a tray in a sunny window to harden for about 24-48 hours

Wait for the recommended sowing time for your area and toss the seed bombs into desired location. In mild climates, sow fall through early spring. The seed bombs will dissolve over time and grow into a colorful wildflower garden for your viewing pleasure! Visiting pollinators will be pleased too!

Schoolhouse Garden Cabbage Patch

A variety of vitamins and minerals give cabbage
a rich nutritional profile

Cabbage is a cool-season crop but coastal southern California's moderate summers allow for year-round cultivation. For spring planting, sow seeds in pots or flats (Mar-Apr) and transplant seedlings (Apr-May). Per San Diego Master Gardeners, it is better to use the early varieties, 60-65 days before early spring planting and use the mid- and late-maturing varieties for fall transplants.

Rich in fiber, potassium vitamins and minerals, cabbage can boost your immune system and improve digestion. A 1-cup serving size delivers 56% of your daily need of bone-building vitamin K, and 36% of vitamin C, which plays a vital role as an immune-supporting antioxidant. 1 cup of raw cabbage also delivers 1 gram of protein.

Typically eaten raw in salads and coleslaw or fermented to make sauerkraut, why relegate such a versatile vegetable solely to side dishes? Consider the possibilities of making this crunchy cruciferous the star of your main course.

Use the following Cabbage Pie recipe to guide you down a different cabbage path:

Ingredients:
One-half head of medium-sized of cabbage (about 425 grams) thinly sliced or shredded
One-half large onion, diced
1 bunch fresh Italian parsley, coarsely chopped
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Black pepper to taste
3 large eggs, beaten
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:
Put the cabbage, onion, parsley and seasonings in a large bowl. Toss to mix.
Poor the beaten eggs over the mixture and toss to coat. sprinkle on the flour and toss to coat.

Heat the vegetable oil in a 10-inch non-stick skillet over medium-low heat.

Add the cabbage mixture and mash it down lightly with a spatula, creating a "pie" shape.
Cover the skillet and let cook until richly-browned on the bottom --- about 10 minutes.

Flip the pie by sliding it top-side-up onto a large plate. Carefully place the slo;;et over the [pie then invert so the bottom of the pie is now top-side up. Cook covered for about 7 minutes.

Cut into wedges and serve.

Smerdu Community Garden Cool Season Crop

Don't discount the scraggly, wintry tomato plant.
Its fruit is sweeter than summer!

Winter tomatoes grow slower so sugars ripen more slowly.

Be sure to leave the fruit on the plant until it is red all over, and keep in mind: calcium is critical to bring about said sweetness and helps prevent blossom end rot.

Tip: Use eggshells to nourish the soil. They're are a great source of calcium,
phosphorous, magnesium and other plant minerals.

Rinse the eggshells under warm water to remove egg residue. This reduces the risk of attracting unwanted pests. Allow them to air dry. When planting, place a whole raw egg or eggshells deeply in the hole. For established plants, crush the shells into pieces and gently work them into the soil. The finer particles are easier to absorb..

Other vegetables that particularly benefit from eggshells include peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, Swiss chard, spinach & lettuce.
