Beautiful, Bountiful Garden Beds
Pine Ave Community Garden
Adding pollinator-friendly flowers to your vegetable patch will help increase pollination of your vegetables for a more prolific crop. Larger groupings of similar flowers make them easy to find.
As always, use non-toxic forms of pest control. Even organic pesticides may kill beneficial insects like bees and butterflies.

Schoolhouse Garden Cabbage Patch

A variety of vitamins and minerals give cabbage
a rich nutritional profile
Cabbage is a cool-season crop but coastal southern California's moderate summers allow for year-round cultivation. For spring planting, sow seeds in pots or flats (Mar-Apr) and transplant seedlings (Apr-May). Per San Diego Master Gardeners, it is better to use the early varieties, 60-65 days before early spring planting and use the mid- and late-maturing varieties for fall transplants.
Rich in fiber, potassium vitamins and minerals, cabbage can boost your immune system and improve digestion. A 1-cup serving size delivers 56% of your daily need of bone-building vitamin K, and 36% of vitamin C, which plays a vital role as an immune-supporting antioxidant. 1 cup of raw cabbage also delivers 1 gram of protein.
Typically eaten raw in salads and coleslaw or fermented to make sauerkraut, why relegate such a versatile vegetable solely to side dishes? Consider the possibilities of making this crunchy cruciferous the star of your main course.
Use the following Cabbage Pie recipe to guide you down a different cabbage path:
Ingredients:
One-half head of medium-sized of cabbage (about 425 grams) thinly sliced or shredded
One-half large onion, diced
1 bunch fresh Italian parsley, coarsely chopped
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Black pepper to taste
3 large eggs, beaten
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions:
Put the cabbage, onion, parsley and seasonings in a large bowl. Toss to mix.
Poor the beaten eggs over the mixture and toss to coat. sprinkle on the flour and toss to coat.
Heat the vegetable oil in a 10-inch non-stick skillet over medium-low heat.
Add the cabbage mixture and mash it down lightly with a spatula, creating a "pie" shape.
Cover the skillet and let cook until richly-browned on the bottom --- about 10 minutes.
Flip the pie by sliding it top-side-up onto a large plate. Carefully place the slo;;et over the [pie then invert so the bottom of the pie is now top-side up. Cook covered for about 7 minutes.
Cut into wedges and serve.
