In response to the questions/concerns regarding legislation in the General Assembly and local issues that affect Clayton County.
There are 13 days remaining in this 2019 Legislative Session and many bills are presented in the hopes to be passed by the end of Day 28 Crossover Day (on Thursday, March 7th). All bills which are passed in one chamber goes to the opposite chamber to start the process over again. Crossover is important because those bills passed can be eligible to be signed into law to become effective upon signing or July 1st.
TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED:
SB 131 Georgia Major Airport Authority Act (http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/20192020/182978.pdf) This bill passed the Senate Committee and could be voted in the Senate Chambers on or before Crossover. It will have a significant impact on Clayton if signed into law. It allows for the change in ownership from Atlanta to the State of Georgia.
HB 316 Voting Bill (http://www.legis.ga.gov/legislation/en-US/Display/20192020/HB/316) This bill passed the House Chambers and is now being considered by the Senate. It addressed many of the concerns raised on voter fraud and suppression during the past statewide election. It allows electronic voting similar to what is currently used versus paper hand ballots which will have to be bubbled in or marked by hand.
ESPLOST renewal for Clayton County Public Schools Early Voting has begun. The election date is Tuesday, March 19, 2019. This is the only item Clayton voters will consider and is an important vote which determines the vitality of the school district.
